This Senior Electrical Hardware Design Engineer position will develop and maintain embedded electronics systems for the transport refrigeration units that are produced by Thermo King. Components will include automotive graded analog & digital electronic devices, controllers, displays, sensors, communication systems, and related components for Thermo King NA/EMEA. This role will provide engineering support for a wide variety of Thermo King product platforms and will also offer the right candidate the opportunity to utilize their current skills and develop new ones by working on a diverse set of technologies.

Core Job Responsibilities (others may be added):

Developing, modifying, and producing new Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Schematics and Layouts using Altium Designer. Maintaining PCBA fabrication data including BOM, Libraries, Data Packages. Perform circuit simulation, analysis and DFMEA/PFMEA to ensure robust design. Experience with different microcontroller architectures and various communication links (CAN, SPI) and their impact on HW design. Evaluate analytical and experimental test results following engineering principles to verify that products meet technical requirements and validating that the design solutions meet customer needs. Familiar with techniques for designing PCBs to support signal integrity and controlled impedance layer stackups. Responsible and collaborate with the development of requirements, technical designs, and Validation Test Plans & Reports. Qualify printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) manufacturing processes, tools, testing, etc. Apply systematic problem-solving skills to define issues, identify root causes, develop, qualify, and implement corrective actions in a timely manner. Interpret, condense and present test data/results. Maintain orderly project records. Document and communicate project status as required both verbally and in written form. Release engineering component prints in product life cycle management systems - Windchill, Arena Solutions, etc.



Education and/or Experience Required


Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (or related discipline) and at least 5 years of electrical hardware or electronics development work experience is required. Master's Degree is a plus.



Essential Skills or Knowledge:


Hardware design and/or integration experience with embedded systems, controllers, displays, sensors, transducers, switches, and displays. Experience with Altium Designer. Experience with RF Test equipment, Oscilloscope, Spectrum Analyzer, Multi-meter, PC based diagnostic and simulation tools. Ability to develop cooperative working relationships with cross-functional teams, (program manager, manufacturing, service, training, supply/product management, sales, etc.) Proficient with MS Office applications (Excel, Project). Strong verbal and written communication skills. Experience with Mentor Graphics, Arena Solutions, Windchill, LTspice, and Mathworks tools (Matlab, Simulink, Stateflow) helpful but not mandatory.


Annual Compensation Range is $75,000 to $140,000 annually. Disclaimer: This salary range is based on US national averages. Actual pay is a result of seniority/experience level, merit and geographic location where the actual work is performed.

Role:

Tesla is looking for an experienced, innovative, Senior Electrical Design Engineer to join the Autopilot-Dojo team in Palo Alto, CA. The Dojo team is responsible for the design, production, and deployment of the Tesla AI training supercomputer. The team is seeking an engineer to lead the electrical design of data centers, R&D space, and associated ancillary spaces. This position is a full time, on-site, role.

Qualifications:

+ Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or higher

+ Registered as a CA Professional Engineer (PE)

+ 8+ years work experience in commercial and/or industrial sector (manufacturing, data center, lab, campus, etc)

+ 5+ years work experience leading design of data centers or other comparable mission critical infrastructure

+ Experience with PLC-based control systems and with Building Management Systems (BMS)

+ Proficient knowledge of industry standards and building codes and regulations

+ Revit and AutoCAD experience

+ Experience with electrical engineering study & breaker setting software (EasyPower, SKM, ETAP)

+ Possess solid understanding of electrical fundamentals and strong engineering judgement.

+ Ability to communicate clearly and interface at an executive level

Responsibilities:

+ Technical leader and Electrical Engineer of Record designing reliable, creative electrical solutions for both retrofit and new construction projects

+ Lead electrical design and review/stamp electrical deliverables including but not limited to:

+ Single line diagram

+ Panel schedule

+ Grounding drawing

+ Underground conduit drawing

+ Power plan

+ Lighting layout

+ Area classification drawing

+ Simulate and analyze electrical engineering study (short circuit study, load flow analysis, arc flash study)

+ Ensure deliverables conform to code and safety standards

+ Develop and improve project workflows, specifications, and standards to ensure each design is consistently excellent

+ Review designs provided by external firms to ensure that designs and specifications meet our engineering standards

+ Participate in construction and commissioning activities, serving as the point of contact for technical questions and real-time issue resolution

+ Collaborate effectively on cross-discipline design teams and build relationships with Construction, Commissioning, Facility Operations, and EHS teams

Responsible for architecting, designing, developing, modifying, evaluating and integrating electronic equipment, electronic parts, components, or integrated circuitry for complex, high performance hardware systems. Determines design approaches and parameters. Analyzes electrical requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints. May use high level programming language to configure programmable logic devices. Analyzes equipment to establish operating data, conducts experimental tests and evaluates results. Selects components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability. Able to identify component operational characteristics that may impact system performance and or sustainability. May also review vendor capability to support development.
Essential Functions:

+ Leads various design activities for new/existing products, predominantly involving medium to high frequencies/edge rates; at times may serve as a supporting role.

+ Considers design for manufacturing through all phases of the development process.

+ Applies complex electrical engineering principles and techniques to support/lead design, development, documentation, verification, and manufacturing debug activities.

+ Analyzes environment/component tolerances to identify corner cases and ensure sufficient design margin for all applicable conditions.

+ Directly interfaces with members of the product development team to produce high quality/dependable products. Members impacted by electrical design include Mechanical Engineering, Test Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Systems Engineering, Safety Engineering, Software Engineering, Verification Engineering, other engineering, PWB Design, and Management teams.

+ Directly interfaces with Component Engineering, Purchasing, and Finance teams to formulate effective obsolescence/cost/lead time mitigation solutions.

+ Completes conceptual designs and trade studies to support marketing/bid/proposal efforts. Draws on product knowledge to define design re-use in potential new products and assess the feasibility of meeting new requirements.

+ Assists in the evaluation of supplier capabilities to provide products or services. Involved in generating the SOWs/specifications for subcontracted items and approving third party deliverables (technical input and oversight).

+ Works under general direction. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives. Typically, influential in setting long-term goals and objectives.

+ Provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Performance has an impact on staffing, cost and schedule.

+ Frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts. Represents the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects.

Qualifications:

+ Bachelor's Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience OR a Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience.

+ Experience with circuit card design processes including requirements generation, preliminary design (block diagram generation, long lead part identification), detailed design (schematic generation, simulation, place & route), test plan generation, and integration & test.

+ Understanding of layout design impacts to signal integrity and voltage drop requirements.

+ Proficiency in operating electronics laboratory equipment including: digital multi-meters, oscilloscopes (DSO, Mixed Signal), signal generators, DC power supplies, etc.

Preferred Additional Skills:

+ An active Security Clearance .Experience with signal integrity analysis tools (Hyperlynx preferred).

+ Experience with Mentor Graphics Xpedition tool suite.

+ Experience with high speed serial protocols.10/25 Gb Ethernet, PCI Express Gen 2/3, Fibre Channel

+ Experience with high speed memory interfaces (DDR3/4).

+ Experience with buck/boost voltage regulation design.

+ Experience with VHDL.

+ Experience integrating with firmware/software and leading lab integration activities.
