About The Role Odys Aviation is pioneering next-generation hybrid-electric aircraft to make sustainable high-speed regional travel a reality. As a Senior Power Electronics Engineer, you will be at the core of our powertrain development, designing and optimizing high-voltage inverters, converters, and motor controllers for our UAV (Laila) and eVTOL (Alta) programs. This role is critical to advancing our high-power, high-frequency switching power electronics stage platforms, tightly coupled embedded controls and fault-resilient propulsion architectures. You will be a hands-on engineer, independently driving hardware design from concept to prototype and validation, ensuring compliance with aerospace standards (ARP4754B, DO-178C, DO-254). Working closely with propulsion, embedded systems, and flight controls teams, you will lay the technical foundation for Odys' powertrain systems and help scale the team as the company grows. Responsibilities Design & Develop high-voltage(400-800VDC) inverters, converters, motor controllers, power filters, and gate drivers for aircraft propulsion. End-to-end hardware development, including characterization of high-power switching devices, designing double-pulse test setups, optimizing DC bulk capacitor selection, and developing thermal management and fault protection strategies. Perform high-fidelity simulations using MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, and SPICE to validate and optimize hardware designs. Integrate hardware with embedded controllers, ensuring robust gate driver design, PMSM motor control, and real-time system monitoring. Ensure compliance with aerospace certification standards (ARP4754B, DO-178C, DO-254) and document design decisions for regulatory approval. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to test, troubleshoot, and refine designs through iterative prototyping. Lead hands-on validation efforts, including lab testing, debugging, and system integration with propulsion and flight hardware. Requirements Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field. 5+ years of hands-on experience designing and testing high-voltage power electronics. Deep expertise in SiC MOSFET-based inverter/converter design, gate driver circuitry, and HV system protection. Strong understanding of PMSM motor control, embedded systems, and fault detection & mitigation. Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, and SPICE for powertrain analysis. Ability to work independently, meet critical milestones, and drive projects from concept to hardware validation. Preferred Qualifications Experience in aerospace or eVTOL powertrain development and familiarity with aircraft certification processes. Expertise in DO-178C (software) and DO-254 (hardware) compliance in regulated environments. Strong background in HV system protection strategies, fault handling, and EMI mitigation. Experience developing advanced control algorithms for PMSMs and high-performance electric motors. Track record of delivering production-ready power electronics in cross-functional engineering teams. Radiant is an El Segundo, CA-based startup building the world's first mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactors. The company's first reactor, Kaleidos, is a 1-megawatt failsafe microreactor that can be transported anywhere power is needed and run for up to five years without the need to refuel. Portable nuclear power with rapid deploy capability can replace similar-sized diesel generators, and provide critical asset support for hospitals, data centers, remote sites, and military bases. Senior Power Electronics Engineer The Senior Power Electronics Engineer will play a pivotal role in the design and development of the power electronics of our nuclear-driven high-speed generator. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the design of high-voltage and high-speed generator drives, DC-DC converters for high-voltage batteries, and standalone and grid-tied inverters. You'll join the Power Conversion and Electrical Systems team responsible for converting mechanical energy generated from a nuclear reactor to electrical energy to deliver to customers. You will own power electronics design, analysis, simulation, and component selection. You will partner cross-functionally with top industry engineers at Radiant, as well as vendors and partner organizations, including government agencies. Your efforts will be instrumental in bringing the first nuclear microreactor to market. Responsibilities and Duties: Design and develop power electronics for a nuclear power generator. Build detailed schematics, select components, PCBA layout, prototype, and validate hardware. Apply EMI/EMC strategies and underlying physics to engineering problems. Utilize expertise in design and validation of gate drivers, power stages, magnetics, and controls. Conduct modeling and detailed simulation of inverters. Own the design and build a fully functioning inverter autonomously. Perform circuit formal analysis, e.g., de-rating and worst-case circuit analysis. Optimize loss, efficiency, and conduct thermal analysis of the inverter. Required Skills and Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, specializing in power electronics. 8+ years of design experience designing high voltage and high power electronics. Desired Skills and Qualifications: Expert with high voltage power semiconductor selection (Si/SiC/GaN, IGBT, Diodes, MOSFETs), gate driver, and protection circuit design. Strong understanding of different PWM switching techniques, DPWM, ZCS, ZVS. Expert with at least one of the common power electronics tools such as PLECS, PSCAD, dSPICE, PSIM, or Simplorer. Solid understanding of capacitor and super-capacitor design and selection, such as electrolytic, film, ceramic, and tantalum. Proficiency in EMI/EMC filter design for stability, noise rejection, and surviving threat signals. Startup experience or ability to work in a fast-paced development environment. Demonstrated experience in embedded programming with C/C++. Additional Requirements Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as necessary to accomplish our mission.
