Industrial Automation Controls Engineer
Express Employment-Skilled Trades (Al
Senior electrical engineer job in Mobile, AL
Job DescriptionA day in the life
You start your morning partnering with Operations to review yesterday's performance, pinpointing opportunities to lift efficiency, quality, and uptime. A quick sync with Engineering, Reliability, and IT sets direction for the day's automation priorities. By mid-morning, you're deep in PLC logic (with Siemens platforms in the mix) and HMI adjustments to resolve a stubborn process deviation. A maintenance tech swings by-this becomes a teachable moment as you mentor the team through best practices in controls troubleshooting and process control.
After lunch, you lead a project check-in: scope, budget, schedule, and regulatory compliance are on track for an upcoming controls retrofit. You draft and refine a capital expenditure proposal that clearly lays out ROI and risk reduction. Later, you evaluate equipment reliability data, mapping out an upgrade plan to improve availability. Before you log off, you touch base with IT on an Industry 4.0/5.0 pilot that blends data systems with AI/ML to surface predictive insights for the plant. On rare occasions, when critical operations call, you're the calm after-hours resource who brings systems back online.
What you will do
Drive process, equipment, and facility improvements that boost efficiency, product quality, and uptime.
Collaborate closely with Operations, Engineering, Reliability, and IT to align automation strategies with production goals.
Lead and mentor maintenance/technical staff on automation and process control methodologies.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex automation, controls, and process issues across PLC/HMI and related systems.
Own automation/controls projects end to end, including budgets, schedules, and compliance requirements.
Evaluate equipment reliability, then plan and execute upgrades where they yield the most impact.
Author and present capital expenditure proposals with clear business justification.
Advance digitalization initiatives, including AI/ML use cases, data systems, and Industry 4.0/5.0 integrations.
Provide occasional after-hours support for critical plant needs.
What you bring
Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical, Mechatronics, or Automation Engineering.
Approximately 3+ years in factory automation, controls, or instrumentation.
PLC/HMI programming proficiency (Siemens preferred).
Strong analytical problem-solving and disciplined project management.
Clear communication skills and a track record of effective cross-functional collaboration.
Preferred
Hands-on experience with Industry 4.0/5.0 technologies.
Background in rolling, steel, or aluminum manufacturing.
Compliance
