This is a 3-4-month, full-time contract (1099) position focused exclusively on preparing our autonomous maritime vehicle for a high-stakes customer demonstration in the March/April 2026 timeframe. You will join the team immediately to audit, harden, and field-test our existing communications architecture to ensure absolute reliability on demo day.
Upon successful execution of the demonstration and completion of the contract term, this role is intended to convert to a permanent W-2 position to lead our systems engineering efforts.
Key Responsibilities
1. Acoustic System Optimization
Configure and optimize acoustic modems (e.g., Teledyne) for specific demonstration environments.
Help maximize acoustic link reliability in challenging acoustic channels.
Parse acoustic payloads and integrate command/control messages into the vehicle's autonomy stack.
2. Wireless Communications Improvement
Implement and test LoRa (Long Range) protocols for reliable, low-bandwidth backup communications and recovery tracking.
Address RF propagation issues over water to maximize data fidelity.
3. Software Integration
Integrate communication drivers into the ROS2 (Robot Operating System) environment using C++ and Python.
Debug scripts between hardware interfaces (serial/UART/USB) and ROS2 nodes.
Develop synchronized communication notes and fail-safe logic to handle link dropouts autonomously.
Explore robust signal processing techniques for underwater acoustics.
4. Demonstration Execution (March - April)
Serve as the technical lead for communications during the customer demonstration.
Manage real-time telemetry monitoring and troubleshooting.
Required Qualifications
Citizenship: Must be a United States Citizen. (Strict requirement).
Availability: Must be available to start immediately (January 2026) and commit fully through April 2026.
Experience: 3-5+ years in marine technology, robotics, or embedded systems.
Hardware Expertise:
Acoustics: Specific experience configuring and troubleshooting Teledyne acoustic modems.
RF [Desired]: Experience with 2.4GHz radios and LoRa integration.
Software Stack:
Strong proficiency in C++ and Python.
Deep experience with ROS 2 for vehicle control and messaging.

About the role

Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
A. Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

B. Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.

The Work This position at the F-35 Training System Support Center (TSSC) will be a member of a small Eglin AFB-based team responsible for the network and computational infrastructure used by TSSC software engineering, courseware development, configuration management and integration/test teams who collectively sustain fielded F-35 training system products.
This suite of hardware and software is collectively called the Courseware Production Environment (CWPE). The selected individual will be assigned a variety of tasks associated with operation, maintenance, and upgrade of the CWPE. * Conduct independent penetration testing, data collection, test automation, and reporting
* Develop test tools and strategies for cybersecurity testing in DOD
* Perform system security analysis on systems and/or software to understand and identify vulnerabilities
* Execute hands-on testing which includes significant technical skills with multiple operating systems. (Windows, Linux, Unix, IOS (network)) as well as software/databases (SQL Server, Oracle)
* Provide technical guidance and expertise to test teams
* Document and communicate test results effectively to technical and non-technical user groups in written and oral formats

BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
A. Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

B. Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.

Your Role
