Senior environmental engineer job description

Barr is seeking an environmental engineer to join our team and undertake challenging and progressive work on projects related to water and waste management and process plant optimization. The work will primarily involve serving clients in the heavy industrial market including mining, oil, natural gas, and/or power generation facilities. Work may include managing multidisciplinary teams; preparing technical work plans and reports; and developing site management strategies, design, and troubleshooting operations. Responsibilities will also involve the development of proposals, scopes of work, and budgets; communications, meetings, and negotiations with clients; and overall project management. Responsibilities may also include mentoring staff, building client relationships, and business development.
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in environmental or civil engineering or related disciplines 10 or more years of relevant work experience Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members, regulators, and clients Strong technical and problem-solving skills Attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness Strong computer skills, including word processing and use of spreadsheets A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with teams of specialists to meet client and project needs Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship Acceptable driving record


Preferred Qualifications:

Registered Professional Engineer (PE) or ability to become registered within one year Project management and leadership experience with complex projects Experience conducting communications, meetings, and negotiations with clients Experience with staff mentoring, building client relationships, and business development


A remote work arrangement may be considered for this position. A remote arrangement refers to working primarily from a home office. Remote arrangements will be considered based on candidate qualifications, location requirements, and Barr's needs.

NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.

The Senior Environmental Engineer manages projects and processes to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and programs.Projects and processes that will improve the energy utility efficiency of the company are also managed.Engineering support is provided to the Live Operations Group. Additional engineering support is provided to company operations and disaster team activities as needed.Support other project managers as needed
Principal and Essential Duties & Responsibilities


Provides a safe, secure and productive work environment for our associates at all Company sites.Manages all construction sites and contractors in accordance with OSHA guidelines. Determines the environmental needs for new and existing company facilities.Manages the design and construction of these additions and modifications. Assists Environmental Managers in the areas of wastewater, water supply, sludge management, air quality, solid waste, hazardous waste, storm water and recycling.Conducts engineering review of SPCC, SWPPP, and NESHAP plans. Provides engineering support to the Live Operations group.Works with feed mill managers, hatchery managers, and grow out associates to improve the processes and supports their capital plan as needed. Provides guidance to the Directors of Operations and their management teams in developing solutions and budgets for improving processes, maintaining facilities, and innovative problem solving related to environmental compliance.



Minimum Education



Bachelors degree in Mechanical, Agricultural, Civil, Environmental Engineering or related.In the absence of a degree, 10 plus years related work experience can be considered.



Experience Requirements



Technical experience in construction, environmental regulations, and poultry processing equipment, feed mill equipment, hatchery equipment project management, and energy utility consumption Demonstrated competency in problem solving, negotiating, managing people, and establishing and meeting schedules Must be able to travel to remote facilities and/or offices for meetings Frequent plant and project site visits are required; travel is extensive Must have adequate computer skills with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office



Experience Preferred



Professional Engineer License Water and Wastewater Operations Experience Certified Energy Manager



Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements


Position is active.On the floor activities such as troubleshooting and re-design of existing systems are routine.May need to move equipment occasionally.May need to access files, supplies and equipment.Work activity is where the processing equipment is located.Work environment includes, but is not limited to, a normal office environment and construction site as well as climate extremes found in a poultry processing operation, feed mill, hatchery and a waste water treatment facility. Position requires an associate to have the ability to move throughout the complex and all facilities. When in a plant environment:Exposure primarily consists of wet and moist floors which include metal and plastic grating surfaces.May be exposed to temperatures of 28 degrees to 100 degrees Fahrenheit with both ambient and 100% humidity. May handle product 25 degrees to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. May be exposed to noise ranges of 50 db to 110 db.May be exposed to all chemicals used in poultry, food, processing facility. Must wear and use protective and safety equipment required for the job as directed by the Company. Must be able to work in confined and or permit required confined spaces and heights. Must be able to work on and or around operating equipment. Must be trained and use Lockout/Tagout

We are looking for someone to be responsible for using environmental engineering principles to manage numerous projects and implement systems to ensure Regeneron's compliance with environmental regulations in accordance with the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, etc. Under the direct supervision of the EH&S Manager and by successfully working multi-functionally within Real Estate and Facilities Management and across R&pD, the Sr. Environmental Engineer will apply their strong understanding of environmental engineering practices and will be responsible for the coordination, management, and/or implementation of environmental permits and management systems.
A typical day might include:

Collect data, perform field verifications, develop drawings, and perform calculations needed to apply for regulatory permits such as local, state, and federal emission permits, stormwater or wastewater discharge permits, and other similar permits Perform calculations and analysis needed for regulatory reporting Create thorough and accurate environmental reports for internal and external use, such as but not limited to Title V, NYSERDA LLRW, SPCC Plans, Tier II reports, air, water, and waste permit applications, etc. Liase with regulatory agencies on environmental compliance and permitting Evaluate current systems and collaborate with partners to design innovative ways to improve or replace the existing systems or processes Create new processes to solve problems and increase efficiency including improving waste management system designs Perform company environmental audits, prepare written reports, and report findings Provides engineering oversight of projects, alterations, repairs, and installations related to environmental compliance to identify and manage environmental permitting responsibilities. Provides solutions and action plans as needed. Participates in planning, development, designs, and coordination of environmental system upgrades, repairs, alterations, installations and participates in project management teams Works with external contractors and consultants as necessary Available 24/7 for assistance and emergency response. Participates on Regeneron's Haz-Mat response team. Support Corporate Responsibility in the data collection and review of public disclosures and ESG scoring
