What general advice would you give to a Senior Facilities Manager?
Irene Thomas Johnson: First, take advantage of all the opportunities that come your way. Do not shy away or turn down an assignment, big or small, or how mundane. Each one of these will lay the foundation for a bigger and better opportunity in the future. Second, get a mentor. Someone whom you can exchange ideas and get candid feedback, someone who can help you open doors in your career. And third, never stop training and asking questions.
What technology do you think will become more important and prevalent for Senior Facilities Managers in the next 3-5 years?
Irene Thomas Johnson: Integrating technology into the workplace will shift greatly in the next 3 to 5 years. Smart building technology is continuing to evolve, and I see this as important and prevalent in building management in the future. It will be more focused on the wellbeing of its occupants, focusing on the customer experience while continuing to drive efficiency and savings for building owners and occupiers.
How would you rate the starting salaries for Senior Facilities Managers, as well as the prospects for salary advancement?
Irene Thomas Johnson: The starting salary in this field is excellent and ranges, depending on your location. We see the average salary in the field is approximately $45,000 to $250,000, with managers averaging $90,000 and Chief Facilities Officers at the higher range. I have personally seen salaries grow as the industry continues to embrace the importance of our field.
