Senior Laboratory Assistant - Clinical Laboratory - Providence Portland Medical Center - 0.9 FTE, Variable

$1,500 hiring bonus for eligible external hires that meet required qualifications and conditions for payment.

The Laboratory Assistant 3 is responsible for the accurate and timely receiving, processing, and labeling of laboratory specimens, and the appropriate handling and/or disbursement of laboratory data and patient results. Supports personnel work with acute-care and outpatient caregivers, vendors, consultants, and other Laboratory Services staff in performing their duty.
Required qualifications:

* 2 years college education. Courses in biological sciences, anatomy, and medical terminology or equivalent education/experience:
* Verifiable experience which includes proficiency in moderately complex testing.

* In compliance with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) criminal background check and fingerprinting may be required for position, based on assigned duties. Involves only those positions at PPMC operating the blood irradiator machine.
* 3 years healthcare, or related field experience including phlebotomy-related experience.
* Demonstrated outstanding Service Excellence experience.
* Clerical or client services experience.
* Phlebotomy will be required in float pool and some ministries.
* Demonstrated experience with State and Federal and other regulatory Compliance regulations including CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services), CAP, TJC (The Joint Commission), CLIA, EMTALA, COBRA and HIPPA.

Preferred qualifications:

* Phlebotomy program with 1 year of phlebotomy related experience or equivalent education/experience:
* Certification from a Clinical Laboratory Assistant Program; or
* 3 years related experience.

* Certification in Phlebotomy, medical assisting, research, or clinical laboratory upon hire.
* Industry-related experience in a high volume, acute care setting.
* 2 years phlebotomy, medical assisting, research, clinical laboratory experience.

The Senior Laboratory Assistant is responsible for the collections and processing of blood specimens, providing assessment and care for neonate, pediatric, adult, and geriatric in-patients, emergency room patients, and patients from other hospital services as needed. He/she will assist as necessary with outpatient specimen collection and processing. The inoculation of microbiology specimens onto primary media and the processing of specimens for referral testing are also responsibilities of the position. He/she is proficient in required competencies.

**Required qualifications:**

+ Current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician license.

+ Healthcare provider level BLS Certification.

**Preferred qualifications:**

Assists with hospital procedures such as bone marrow collection and smear preparation as well as fine needle aspirations. Performs all paperwork, technical and non-technical procedures required to process and submit specimens. Assigns specific computed generated identification numbers, checks for accuracy, and records all items processed. Forwards accessioned specimen to designated laboratory locations/benches; and locating and correcting any discrepancies. Learns and keeps familiar with lab procedures and location of stored specimens. Locates specimens and pulls from various departments as requested. This will be a First Shift Position: Monday-Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm

Technical Responsibilities

  • Assist with bone marrow collection procedures and smear preparation
  • Perform fine needle aspiration smears and collection
  • Provide assistance to cytotechnologists with EUS, EBUS, and Ion Endoluminal procedures
  • Operation and maintenance of cryostats
  • Provision of specimen processing and staining assistance to pathologists and pathologist's assistant staff
  • Provide on-site customer service to hospital physicians, nurses, and other support personnel
  • Perform equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Monitor and record required data on equipment as assigned
  • Performs quality control and confirms accuracy for accessioned cases received
  • Preparation of bulk fluids
  • Unload slides after completed runs
  • Completes additional work related assignments as required or requested by the department manager, senior technologist or group lead

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintenance and ordering of pathology supplies
  • Print and collate case worksheets and slides
  • File slides and paperwork
  • Assemble cases and documents

Environment/Safety

  • Removal and disposal of liquid and solid waste.
  • Responsible for the knowledge and practice of safety SOP's in the laboratory
  • Complete all required EHS training
  • Wear appropriate PPE as required
  • Comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, LCA EHS policies/ procedures and the requirements of accrediting organizations
  • Conduct work in a safe and environmentally responsible manner

  • Takes direction from the on-site professional and medical staff.
