Essential Functions Lead and contribute to the design, analysis, and development of highway and roadway projects, ensuring compliance with relevant codes, standards, and regulations Utilize industry standard programs such as MicroStation, GeoPak, OpenRoads Designer, Civil 3D, and other related design software to create detailed highway design plans, alignments, profiles, cross-sections, and other required documentation Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, designers, and project managers, to develop innovative and cost-effective solutions for complex transportation projects Apply your expertise in highway design standards to create safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible designs for various types of roads and highways Participate in the preparation of technical reports, feasibility studies, and design calculations to support project proposals and submissions Lead the coordination and communication with clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to ensure project requirements are met and approvals are obtained Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers and designers, fostering their professional growth and development Perform quality control reviews of design documents to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project objectives Actively stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and advancements in highway design to enhance the team's capabilities and project outcomes Required Skills and Experience Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field from an accredited institution A minimum of Four (4) years of experience in highway and roadway design, with a significant focus on DOT projects Current Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in civil engineering or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire Proficiency in one or more of the following - MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, Civil 3D, and other relevant design software Strong understanding of highway design standards, regulations, and guidelines including: MUTCD , VDOT , AASHTO Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively liaise with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders Detail-oriented with a commitment to delivering high-quality design documents Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines Preferred Skills and Experience Master's degree in civil engineering Eight (8) + years of experience in highway and roadway design, with a significant focus on DOT projects Alternate Project Delivery experience Other Duties This job description indicates the general nature and levels of work, knowledge, skills, abilities and other essential functions (as covered under ADA) expected. Summary/Objective: Our Project Engineer - MEP will work with the Project Managers (PM's) and Project Manager Assistants (PMA's) to provide leadership for our Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel project. Our Project Engineers interact daily with the field crews, customers, vendors, and subcontractors. A Project Engineers main objective is to make sure that all of our team members have the correct information and resources to be successful. The Project Engineer assists Project Managers to ensure that work installed on the project meets plan and specification requirements. This is a national role that requires relocation. Duties and Responsibilities * Assures compliance by becoming intimately familiar with the assigned project plans and specifications. Reviews shop drawing and submittals. * Reviews plans from the standpoint of value analysis and constructability, ensuring appropriate materials are utilized. Communicates inconsistencies to the architect. * Recommends labor saving and other cost-saving methods, which will save Layton and/or the owner money in actual construction. * Attends and takes notes for project team meetings, including weekly Owner/Architect meetings and subcontractor coordination meetings. Distributes meeting minutes to participants. * Publishes weekly progress reports for assigned projects and follows up for receipt, review, and distribution of information required for project construction. * Updates project schedules as needed. * Assists in bidding and in developing scope of work for trade contractors. * Works with the superintendent to prepare project schedule, including establishing dates for receiving shop drawings and milestones necessary to complete the project on time. Follows up for review and approval for shop drawings, samples, material lists, etc. * Maintains logs, reflecting the status of shop drawings, requests for clarification, change requests, and proposal requests. * Advises on proper procedures for concrete pours. Inspects structural reinforcing. * Coordinates standard slump and compaction testing to verify compliance to specifications. * Reviews field procedures and final installation of structural elements to ensure compliance of the work. * Performs work sampling. Observes and analyzes work methods, techniques, and procedures to advise superintendent on improvement of production efficiency. * Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures. Report unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Safety. Qualifications * Bachelor's degree in construction management or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. * 1+ year of experience with a commercial general contractor, or comparable internship experience, preferred. * Good written and oral communication skills.
