Key Requirements: A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field is required, with an emphasis on automation. Equivalent experience will also be considered. Master of Science degree preferred. Automation Engineering experience. Position Summary: Performs engineering work varied in nature and complexity encompassing planning, evaluating, designing, developing and adapting tools, machines, and new technologies for the purpose of producing new products, increasing productivity on existing products, enhancing quality and reducing manufacturing costs (i.e., the optimum use of workers, machines, materials and facilities). Works closely with other engineers, maintenance, logistics, manufacturing and quality to achieve optimum manufacturing objectives. Develops capital plan and initiates appropriation requests (PAR's) for major projects. Establishes systems for control of project progress, time schedules and costs. Directly responsible for the engineering and related functions of his/her assigned manufacturing operation(s) including: The setup and maintenance of labor standards Development of the manufacturing process for new products and maintaining process documentation including manufacturing drawings, tooling, fixtures, BOM, process routings, SPI's, etc. Methods, processes and procedures analysis and work simplification techniques Designing and subcontracting of tools, fixtures and gauging Controlling NC/CNC functions, including setup sheets, DNC systems and all other interacting projects as well as the training of operators and others Analyzing and processing engineering change requests Plant, machinery, equipment, assembly layouts Troubleshooting technically challenging problems (machinery, equipment, processes) Analyzing for improvement to labor, manufacturing costs, variances and margins Initiates cost reduction proposals and investigates proposals from other sources. Compiles appropriate information, makes recommendations for action, implements (if appropriate) and checks on results obtained. Directs / oversees cost reduction and product / process improvement projects as assigned. Renders technical service to all other departments as required. Lead or participate in development of Corrective Actions to address internal or externally identified problems. Manages / performs other duties and projects as assigned. Minimum Education/Experience: Minimally a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related degree plus 2 - 4 years of relevant experience. A minimum education requirement of a Technical Associate Degree/Apprenticeship Graduate plus at least 5 - 8 years of directly relatable or equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of degree. About the Role - You will: * Design high quality mechanical and electromechanical part and assembly designs efficiently and with good modeling practices * Develop cost effective, innovative and weight-optimized structural solutions to meet thermal, NVH, and crash safety requirements * Create and manage detailed engineering drawings/design data (3D and 2D), utilizing Catia 3DExperience (3DX) by applying a high standard of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) * Generate detailed DFMEA and DVP&R documentation * Responsible for the development of technical project plans and schedules covering engineering activities, meeting all design control and product development SOP requirements * Support the transition of designs from prototype to high-volume manufacturing, focusing on Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) * Mentor junior engineers and serve as a subject expert within the mechanical engineering team Your Experience Includes: * Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Bachelor's with 10+ years OR Master's with 8+ industry experience in mechanical design * Proficient in 3D CAD design and 2D drafting (including GD&T and Datum structuring) of mechanical components (CATIA experience is preferred) * Knowledgeable in high and low volume manufacturing methods, especially in aluminum casting, extrusion, stamping, forging, injection molding etc. * Deep understanding of structural mechanics, fatigue analysis, thermal management principles and ability to interpret FEA/CFD analysis results * Strong background with DFMEA, PFMEA, tolerance stack-up etc. * Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to perform root cause analysis Additional Desired Skills: * Experience in high voltage battery systems, energy storage or EV industry * Knowledge of battery electrical components (cells, modules, current collectors, busbars, module too pack integration etc) * Knowledge of manufacturing processes unique to battery pack construction (e.g., laser welding, potting, sealing) Designed and assembled in the United States, Proterra's innovative battery platform offers industry-leading energy density, durability, performance and safety systems - enabling Proterra EV batteries to be the premium choice for commercial vehicles and industrial equipment.
