The Senior Packaging Engineer I will be responsible for the supporting and/or managing various packaging projects, including the designing, developing, and validating a wide variety of package designs to support the development of orthopedic implants and associated devices that are of a complex nature. He or she will also be responsible for developing and coordinating the requirements and specifications for new packaging equipment. He or she will work in a matrix/cross functional product development environment. Coordination of internal and external/contractor resources to develop solutions required to solve complex engineering problems will be a primary focus. Experience with new technologies that will drive packaging innovation resulting in competitive advantages across global platforms is desired. Strong communication, teamwork and organizational skills are essential. A thorough understanding of ISO13485, ISO11607, 21 CFR 820 and Process Validation is a must.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities

* Assists/leads the design of new packages and improvement of legacy designs and manufacturing processes or serve as a key member on a project team.
* Review and understand equipment specifications as supplied by equipment vendors. Management of capital projects from feasibility concept through installation and validation.
* Supports/directs the generation of prototype samples to evaluate new materials and/or design concepts.
* Assists/leads the Risk Analysis role for the package design, process design and process FMEA's.
* Assists with and develops comprehensive validation plans, generates protocol and reports.
* Supports/manages collaboration across multiple international facilities.
* Identifies new technologies that will provide innovation and product differentiation.
* Support/manage as required Packaging Development related quality improvement initiatives.

Expected Areas of Competence

* Advanced knowledge of ISO13485 (Design Controls) and ISO11607 (Packaging Validation).
* Advanced knowledge of packaging and regulatory standards that drive the medical device industry.
* Ability to analyze and develop new testing criteria and requirements.
* Identify customer requirements for a new package designs.
* Demonstrated ability to lead and influence all parts of the organization.
* Microsoft Office Suite and Project; Demonstrated ability to learn and apply multiple skill sets as outline by the engineering review board (i.e. manufacturing, design, materials and testing).

Duration: 12 Month+ Contract potential for hire

Responsibilities:

+ Interacts with all levels of management, works cross-functionally, participates in project planning activities, and provides technical guidance in adjacent areas.

+ Provides package design, development, material selection and commercialization services which includes conducting appropriate validation testing to confirm performance and creating comprehensive specifications

+ Accountable for deliverables & project milestones.

+ Acts proactively to plan and prioritizes work, insuring deadlines & customer expectations are met.

+ Manages parallel paths, cost containment, operational efficiency and problem-solving efforts.

+ Enforces established standards, controls and processes.

Requirements:

+ BS Degree in Packaging Engineering, Packaging Technology or Packaging Science or related discipline

+ At least 7 years of experience in the design, development and commercialization of packaging products (plastics)

+ Testing experience on equipment; Instron, Lansmont, Optical Comparator, Magna Mike, COF, torque testing, and simulated shipment tests

+ Applied knowledge in the areas of plastics (blow-molding & injection molding), flexibles/laminates corrugated & labels

+ Attention to detail; strong communication and interpersonal skills; business sense and commercial awareness

+ Strong math and analytical skills to evaluate complex and sometimes ambiguous situations

The Packaging Engineer develops and tests packaging for new and existing products. A Packaging Engineer II leads packaging activities with a cross-functional team including SBU Product Management, Regulatory Affairs, Operations, Quality Assurance, Clinical Affairs, and other Engineering personnel.
Responsibilities

• Apply packaging design principles from the Pharmaceutical/medicaldevice field to maintain and develop appropriate packaging solutions• Perform distribution testing for Research & Development and Remediation Projects• Develop and maintain department standards in packaging• Ability to lead multiple projects to successful completion with tighttime lines and critical deliverables• Ensure compliance of equipment and packaging designs with companyquality system• Perform verification and validation testing of packaging designs andmanufacturing methods• Write and maintain appropriate documentation per the company qualitysystem.• Evaluate issues with existing packaging and implement correctiveactions

Qualifications

• Master of Science in Packaging Science, or closely related field; or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Packaging Science closely related field and 5 years experience and amount as to provide a comparable background• Experience with medical packaging materials (Tyvek, PE/PET films, PETG trays, etc.) preferred• Experience with environmental and regulatory requirements and standards that relate to medical packaging design and testing (i.e. ASTM F1886, F88, F2096, D4169, and ISO 11607)
