Have you ever wondered who is responsible for all the stages of the manufacturing process in many industries or who is responsible for effectively diagnosing and troubleshooting manufacturing machinery? If so, you may be happy to know that senior process technicians complete these important tasks. They are responsible for running and controlling equipment while also recording results in strict obedience to procedures in the production processes or the production environment.

Under the supervision of a senior manager of manufacturing engineering, the senior process technician ensures that technical competency and compliance are met. They work together with the Engineering team and members of the technical team to introduce innovative ideas to increase or improve the product or consumer content.

Daily, they design and perform trials on equipment and components to develop efforts and foster a strong production commitment. You should note that most employers look for at least six years of work experience in the field, preferably in a high-volume manufacturing environment. It is advantageous for candidates also to have hands-on experience in solving technical problems and implementing solutions.

What general advice would you give to a senior process technician?

Chair, Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology, Professor, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Michigan Technological University

Engineering technology graduates are masters of technology, gaining a broad and deep understanding of the processes, systems, tools, and techniques necessary to construct, modify, operate, and maintain an engineering design. They act as technological integrators, bridging the gap between the skilled trades and engineering fundamentals. This is a great career path for those who enjoy engineering concepts but would rather spend time working with their hands solving specific technical issues than tackling broader, more complex design challenges.
