Research is a vital, yet underappreciated and often underfunded, field that helps maintain our modern standards of life. Researchers build new technologies, cure disease, and more. Senior research associate scientists are some of the people working tirelessly in labs for the benefit of humanity.

Senior research associate scientists usually work in a lab, whether it is a lab run by a private company, the government, or a university. They can have various specialties, from biology to chemistry and beyond. In the lab, they design and execute various experiments to identify new pathogens, develop innovative treatments, and more.

Senior research associate scientists need to put in a lot of work before they can reach this position. Most have a master's degree or even a doctorate in their field, showing the years of study that they've dedicated to science. They also have many years of laboratory experience as research assistants and junior research associates before finally earning a senior position.

What general advice would you give to a senior research associate scientist?

I would advise students just graduating to be flexible and open-minded in their job search. Chemistry is a challenging major, and students who succeed in it have learned how to learn, so they shouldn't assume that pure chemistry is the only thing they can do. One growing field is biomedical research, and chemistry majors are often qualified for jobs in that area. If you have other strengths, like writing, there are often jobs that can combine them as a technical writer or work for a science journal. There are jobs out there that might be perfect for you that you haven't heard of until you see an ad for it, so be open to different possibilities.
