About the Role
As a Senior Principal Data Engineer within the Enterprise Data & Analytics Office, you will lead the design, evolution, and operational excellence of Nexus, UKG's unified, GCP-based data platform, enabling analytics, AI, and enterprise decision-making at scale.
You will translate architectural vision into reliable, scalable, cost-efficient data systems, lead platform modernization efforts, and set the engineering bar for data ingestion, transformation, and operational analytics across UKG.
Key Responsibilities Enterprise Data Engineering Leadership
Drive the implementation of standardized medallion architecture (Bronze-Silver-Gold) across all domains.
Establish and enforce engineering patterns for batch, streaming, CDC, and event-driven pipelines.
Drive design patterns for Fact and Dimension modeling, data mesh, and change data capture (CDC).
Platform & Pipeline Excellence
Design and evolve scalable data pipelines using GCP-native services (BigQuery, GCS, Composer, Pub/Sub, Dataflow) and Databricks (Delta Lake, DLT).
Ensure platform reliability, performance, and scalability for petabyte-scale analytics workloads.
Lead engineering decisions around partitioning, clustering, query optimization, and cost controls (FinOps).
Own observability standards (freshness, SLAs, error handling, monitoring).
Engineering Standards, Quality & Governance
Define and enforce engineering standards for data quality, testing, CI/CD, and production readiness.
Implement automated data quality frameworks, lineage, and metadata integration in partnership with Data Governance and Architecture teams.
Ensure all pipelines meet SOX, security, and auditability requirements.
Partner with Architects to ensure engineering implementations align to enterprise reference architectures.
Cross-Functional Delivery & Influence
Partner with Product Managers, Product Owners, Architects, and Analytics leaders to deliver high-impact data capabilities.
Act as the technical escalation point for complex production issues and platform risks.
Influence roadmap decisions by balancing technical feasibility, delivery velocity, and long-term sustainability.
Support ESE Agile delivery by enabling architecture runway and reducing technical blockers.
Mentorship & Organizational Impact
Mentor Principal, Senior, and Mid-level Data Engineers, raising the overall engineering maturity of the organization.

Job Summary
The Division of Substation & Meter at Hawaiian Electric Company has a management vacancy available for a Professional level role. The position is available at either the Substation Service Engineer or Senior Substation Service Engineer level, whichever best matches the applicant's qualifications.
Responsibilities - Substation Service Engineer
Provides engineering support to the department for the construction and maintenance of the transmission and distribution systems. Must be available for emergency calls at all times.
Conducts investigations, working with field personnel and equipment manufacturers to resolve equipment problems; ensures proper resolution with engineering and vendors. Participates in Root Cause Analysis (RCA).

Serves on committees in a leadership capacity, working with other departments on system changes, IMT, risk management, ERP enhancements, smart grid technology, asset management, reliability strategies, and renewable energy initiatives.
Leads and consults with manufacturers, engineering, operations, project management, and contractors to ascertain proper equipment design, planning, scheduling, troubleshooting, operational performance, and emergency response.

Qualifications - Knowledge Requirements

Working knowledge of personal computers, spreadsheet, and word processing software.
Understanding of operation and maintenance principles for substation equipment in an electric utility environment.

• Provide services for Windows Operating Systems and Exchange support including troubleshooting for users on Military Sealift Command (MSC) vessels and Network Operations Center

• Provide, respond to, resolve, and document customer windows and e-mail issues using the Navy Enterprise Service Desk (NESD) ticket system (Helix)

• Administer and optimize Group Policy Objects (GPOs) by designing, reviewing, and troubleshooting policies to maintain a secure and compliant enterprise environment

Our Distinguished Engineer team drives architecture and technical direction for Splunk's $3.5B platform, ingesting petabytes of data for over 95% of the Fortune 100. **Impact:**
Architect and operationalize Spark at scale as a core component of Cisco Data Fabric, enabling customers to access and analyze exponentially more data across diverse organizational sources. Build resilient, always-on infrastructure with automatic retry logic, fault tolerance, and seamless integration across myriad data sources and formats including Parquet, Iceberg, and modern table formats. Design the operational backbone-monitoring, observability, error handling, and horizontal scalability-that enables hundreds of engineers to build features confidently on solid foundations. Establish architectural patterns and support mechanisms that ensure high availability while maintaining performance at petabyte scale. Success is measured by customer adoption of data fabric capabilities and operational reliability metrics-uptime, ingestion performance, and incident reduction-that directly impact customer value.
**Minimum Qualifications:**
+ Bachelor's in Computer Science (or equivalent) with 15+ years of related experience; or Master's with 12+ years; or PhD with 8+ years or equivalent experience
+ Designed and deployed production Spark deployments at scale in cloud environments
+ Experience with modern data formats including Parquet, Iceberg, and related table/columnar formats
+ Production experience with AWS cloud platform
+ Led technical decisions and architectural direction across engineering organizations of 50+ engineers
**Preferred Qualifications:**
+ Production experience with Azure and/or GCP cloud platforms
+ Experience integrating with diverse data platforms such as Snowflake, Pinot, Databricks, Trino, or similar systems
+ Extensive Kubernetes experience in production environments
+ Proven track record mentoring and growing engineers, with strong collaboration skills across sponsors, design, product management, and engineering teams

The starting salary range posted for this position is $267,600.00 to $339,400.00 and reflects the projected salary range for new hires in this position in U.S. and/or Canada locations, not including incentive compensation*, equity, or benefits.
Individual pay is determined by the candidate's hiring location, market conditions, job-related skillset, experience, qualifications, education, certifications, and/or training. The full salary range for certain locations is listed below. U.S. employees are offered benefits, subject to Cisco's plan eligibility rules, which include medical, dental and vision insurance, a 401(k) plan with a Cisco matching contribution, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability coverage, and basic life insurance. Employees may be eligible to receive grants of Cisco restricted stock units, which vest following continued employment with Cisco for defined periods of time.
U.S. employees are eligible for paid time away as described below, subject to Cisco's policies:
+ 10 paid holidays per full calendar year, plus 1 floating holiday for non-exempt employees
+ 1 paid day off for employee's birthday, paid year-end holiday shutdown, and 4 paid days off for personal wellness determined by Cisco
+ Non-exempt employees** receive 16 days of paid vacation time per full calendar year, accrued at rate of 4.92 hours per pay period for full-time employees
+ Exempt employees participate in Cisco's flexible vacation time off program, which has no defined limit on how much vacation time eligible employees may use (subject to availability and some business limitations)
+ 80 hours of sick time off provided on hire date and each January 1st thereafter, and up to 80 hours of unused sick time carried forward from one calendar year to the next
+ Additional paid time away may be requested to deal with critical or emergency issues for family members
+ Optional 10 paid days per full calendar year to volunteer
For non-sales roles, employees are also eligible to earn annual bonuses subject to Cisco's policies.
Employees on sales plans earn performance-based incentive pay on top of their base salary, which is split between quota and non-quota components, subject to the applicable Cisco plan. For quota-based incentive pay, Cisco typically pays as follows:
+ .75% of incentive target for each 1% of revenue attainment up to 50% of quota;
+ 1.5% of incentive target for each 1% of attainment between 50% and 75%;
+ 1% of incentive target for each 1% of attainment between 75% and 100%; and
+ Once performance exceeds 100% attainment, incentive rates are at or above 1% for each 1% of attainment with no cap on incentive compensation.
For non-quota-based sales performance elements such as strategic sales objectives, Cisco may pay 0% up to 125% of target. Cisco sales plans do not have a minimum threshold of performance for sales incentive compensation to be paid.

$273,200.00 - $442,600.00
Non-Metro New York state & Washington state:
$267,600.00 - $390,300.00
