As a Security Officer with Sentara, you will ensure a physically safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and employees. This position's primary duties include actively patrolling campuses and monitoring activity in and around buildings and responding appropriately to both routine and emergent situations. Job Summary
As a Security Officer, you will be part of a professional team that is charged with the mission of providing a safe and secure environment for the Brigham and Women's Hospital community.

GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Receiving general direction from the Security Supervisor, incumbent ensures a safe and secure environment; provides protective service and response for protection of the people and property of the Hospital; is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operation of Department.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Provide protection to people and property through patrol, investigation, monitoring alarms and surveillance cameras. • Patrol buildings and grounds, identify unsafe conditions and improperly secured areas/property to help prevent theft, injuries or damages. • Provide a high level of customer service by interacting with patients, visitors and staff in a professional manner that is proactive, friendly and helpful; create safety awareness among the hospital community. • Provide emergency response to a variety of situations. • Conduct preliminary investigations into thefts, shortages and other complaints involving potential misconduct. • Provide escorts for staff, visitors and patients as requested. • Perform patient restraints; detains individuals suspected of criminal conduct. • Maintain accountability for valuables/property and other forms of evidence. • Assist motorists with jump starts and lockouts. • Prepare and submit written reports in a complete and accurate manner and log all incidents. • May be assigned to special duties such as Bike Patrol and/or Community Liaison Officer. • May be assigned to an off-site location, including administrative buildings, ambulatory care centers, and/or community based health clinics. Will be cross-trained in other locations beyond normally assigned work space. • May be required to work other shifts and/or locations when necessary. • Perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: -Minimum of a high school diploma required. A strong educational background (Associate's or Bachelor's degree) in criminal justice or related field is preferred. A combination of both experience and education will be considered. -1-3 years of security or related experience preferred. -Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's license from state of residence. -Must submit to and pass an initial and annual criminal background check. -Must obtain and maintain required certifications in the following programs (training provided by department): o CPR/AED/First Aid o Narcan (Naloxone) Training o AVADE/HDTS De-Escalation Training o International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) Basic Officer Certification (within first 90 days) -The ability to be licensed as a Special State Police Officer under the Commonwealth of MA General Laws Chapter 22 C, section 63 preferred.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: -Exemplary customer service and communication skills. Must be able to handle complex interpersonal situations and crisis management scenarios. -Strong risk analysis and organizational skills. -Reliable and flexible. -Must be able to gather, analyze, evaluate, and utilize facts and evidence. Interview victims, complainants, witnesses, and suspects. -Must be able to prepare clear and concise reports and routine correspondence. -Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. -Must be able to read, write and speak English fluently. WORKING CONDITIONS: -Physically must be able to lift 50 pounds. Ability to stand/walk for a minimum of 8 hours. Ability to run to any emergency within the hospital and adjoining campuses and be able to verbally and physically control an emergency situation upon arrival if necessary. Strong sight and hearing abilities needed in order to effectively deal with diverse and emergency situations. Capacity to use appropriate force to overcome, arrest or restrain someone if necessary. -Each officer must be able to perform each task in the functional assessment outlined below upon hire (within the first 90 days) and annually. 3 Minute Step Test • Measures the heart rate in the recovery period following three minutes of stepping. • Stand with the step in front of you. Begin by stepping up and down the step in cadence with the metronome. Continue with this exercise for three minutes. Then you will be asked to sit down in and your heart rate will be recorded after one minute of rest. Step, Bend, and Crawl • Measures mobility and coordination. • Stand in front of the hurdle. Start by stepping over the hurdle, bending and crawling under the table, and stepping over the second hurdle. Reverse direction and repeat the sequence. Stretcher Carry • Measures the ability to assist lifting a stretcher. • You and a partner will stand at either end of the stretcher that is loaded with approximately 150 lbs in weight. Bend with your legs with your back straight and grasp the stretcher. Straighten your legs to lift the stretcher, then reverse to put the stretcher back down. Pull and Drag • Measures upper body strength • Take firm hold onto the belts and drag the 150 lb. sled 10 feet across the room and reverse directions back to the starting position. Balance Walk • Measures balance. • Start at the end of the 1 inch wide tape. When prompted to start, step on the tape, alternating with each foot until you reach the end of the tape. Your foot must be in contact with the tape on each step. Stair Climb • The stair climb measures the ability to climb stairs at a quick pace. • Starting at the bottom of the stairway, on the command Go, the watch is started and you must walk up four flights of stairs at a quick pace. At the top of the stairs, you will need to take a card and walk quickly down the four flights of stairs to the starting point and return the card to your proctor. You must complete this in 35 seconds or less.

Qualifications Minimum of a high school diploma required. A strong educational background (associate's or bachelor's degree) in criminal justice or related field is preferred. A combination of both experience and education will be considered. A minimum of 1-3 years of security or related experience preferred. Shift Assignment The Security Officer must be available to staff 24-hour shift at the following times: - Sundays: 2:30 PM - 10:30 PM - Wednesdays: 2:30 PM - 10:30 PM - Fridays: 2:30 PM - 10:30 PM Principal Duties & Responsibilities - Performs daily operational functions as directed and upon request by the Security Supervisor or the Dispatcher to ensure that McLean's operational needs are met efficiently. - Operational responsibilities of the Officer include, but are not limited to, the following: - Responds immediately and appropriately to all emergency requests for assistance issued by the Supervisor or Dispatcher. - Responds immediately and appropriately to all emergency, contingency, or disaster situations. - Responds as soon as possible to all non-emergency calls assigned by the Supervisor or Dispatcher. - Documents all incidents after response and informs Dispatcher of actions taken. - Completes all electronic incident reports in an objective manner, writes in a clear style and submits all incident reports and accompanying documentation prior to departing from campus at the end of the shift. - Utilizes strong customer service skills and community policing philosophies to develop and build strong relationships with the hospital community. - Manages complex and dynamic and emotionally charged situations to help restore order, investigate nefarious or criminal activity and take the appropriate safety and security actions. - Conducts initial investigations into all reports of suspicious activity, persons, hazards or risk and takes the necessary steps to mitigate risk to patients, visitors and staff. - Takes appropriate actions when necessary, appropriate or mandated, based on training procedure and legal requirements. - Uses effective and appropriate de-escalation techniques when addressing disorderly, disruptive or emotionally charged persons. - Demonstrates reasonable application of physical force when necessary and appropriate, to contain, restrain or stop a physical threat or assault. - Provides escorts to patients, visitors, employees, and others to ensure the safety of the requester. - Patrols McLean property and grounds, documents all deficiencies and/or violations of policy. - Ensures that only authorized vehicles are allowed access to parking areas controlled by McLean and documents violations of parking policy. - Performs access control functions, including: ensuring that all employees, vendors and contractors are in possession of an authorized form of identification and that is clearly visible; enforcing McLean visitor policies and restrictions; restricting\ access by individuals who have no authorized business on McLean property. - Performs Dispatch and/or Console duties as assigned by the Supervisor/Manager. Dispatch/console duties include, but are not limited to, the following: - Coordinates Security activities, acts as liaison to other McLean departments and external agencies, reflects the friendly, courteous, helpful and professional attitude of the department at all times. - Coordinates assignments of scheduled staff to calls for service and other activities in an equitable fashion. - Answers incoming internal and external phone calls, provides callers with information and appropriate transfers. - Prioritizes and assigns responses to incidents and requests for assistance and ensures that all are resolved in a timely fashion. - Maintains a chain of custody of all property, evidence and equipment turned in to the Security office. - Documents all actions taken by departmental staff, all incidents reported and ensures that all supporting documentation is provided by Security officers assigned to respondto calls for assistance. - Monitors all electronic security and fire systems associated with the departmental operations at the Security Office in accordance with department Policies and Procedures. - Notifies the Supervisor when appropriate to provide additional resources or regarding a systems failure. - Performs all services in accordance with the appropriate McLean Policy and Procedure Manual. - Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor/Manager.
Qualifications
Qualifications Minimum of a high school diploma required. A strong educational background (associate's or bachelor's degree) in criminal justice or related field is preferred. A combination of both experience and education will be considered. A minimum of 1-3 years of security or related experience preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver's License. Must obtain and maintain required certification in the following programs (training provided by department): - CPR/AED/First Aid - CPI De-Escalation Training - International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) Basic Officer Certification (within first 90 days) Skills, Abilities, & Competencies Required Strong interpersonal and communications: positive image, tact and diplomacy, active listener, articulate. It is the responsibility of a UMass Memorial Police Officer to enforce the policies of the medical center and the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Investigate reports of potential criminal conduct against PH&S staff, visitors, staff, and property; respond and assist in restraining patients; detain individuals when necessary or at the direction of a police officer; and provide protective services to high risk areas. Mobile positions will conduct vehicle and foot patrols, patient transports, site surveys, threat assessments, patient standbys, alarm/nuisance call response, special details and assist in training of clinic personnel. May be required to support any Providence or affiliated organizations within the Oregon Region.

Required Qualifications:
+ Oregon Private Security Armed/Unarmed Professional - Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training upon hire, Or
+ Oregon Private Security Unarmed Professional - Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training upon hire.
+ Upon hire: Valid Driver's License
+ Upon hire: Private Security Temporary Work Permit PS-20
+ Upon request: Driving may be necessary as part of this role. Caregivers are required to comply with all state laws and requirements for driving. Caregivers will be expected to provide proof of driver license and auto insurance upon request. See policy for additional information.
+ 1 year experience using personal computer with standard Microsoft applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Coursework/Training: College level coursework in professionally related fields such as criminal justice, social work, psychology or any social science.
+ H.S. Diploma or GED
+ 1 year Security/law enforcement experience such as corrections, police, reserve and military police.
+ Direct patient care experience in a healthcare industry.

Job Description
The Senior Armed Security Officer actively monitors Concealed Weapons Detection System(s) at division entrances. In the event a weapon is found, the armed officer will inform the visitor/patient that the weapon is not allowed in the hospital. Officers may secure the weapon for the duration of the persons' visit for safekeeping. Armed officers may patrol the campus and monitor activity in and around buildings and grounds and respond appropriately to routine and emergency situations. This individual performs camera surveillance, maintains department logs and records, uses computer skills for documentation of daily activities, conducts security investigations, evaluates situations, and takes appropriate steps for professional and timely resolution.
