Sentara is hiring a Cardiovascular Surgical Technologist I for Sentara's Heart Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia.
Sign on Bonus up to $30,000 offered for experienced cardiac candidates! Relocation packages available!
Shift: 10-hour shifts: 6-4:30pm, 7-530pm, or 9-730pm
Call is 2-3 per week and every other weekend call with a 30 min response time
Overview of Heart Hospital
Sentara Norfolk General/Sentara Heart Hospital is a comprehensive, Level 1 Trauma center, located in Norfolk, VA. The Heart Hospital Cardiac Surgery program has dedicated CVOR rooms, served by a dedicated cardiac OR team, who perform high volume, complex open-heart CABG, Valve, Aortic, and Structural cases (TAVR). We also serve as the regional center for ECMO/MCS, Heart Transplant, and Aortic dissection cares.
Overview
The Cardiovascular Surgical Technologist plays a critical role in assisting cardiovascular surgeons during open-heart, vascular, and thoracic surgical procedures. This highly specialized surgical technologist is responsible for preparing the operating room, organizing surgical instruments and supplies, and ensuring a sterile environment. The technologist anticipates the surgeon's needs and provides intraoperative support to optimize surgical outcomes, patient safety, and procedural efficiency.

The Surgical Technologist II is a proficient level practitioner who assists surgeons and nurses with patients, equipment preparation, aseptic technique, and surgical procedures in the operating room. They will prepare the operating room for surgery by assembling routine supplies, materials, instruments, and equipment, and will obtain special supplies indicated by physician. They also set up and operate a variety of specialized instrumentation, manual and powered equipment.
Job Functions:
• Functions as the scrub person and assists as trained during operative and other invasive procedures by assembling supplies and equipment required for the procedure.
• Prepares and organizes sterile supplies and instruments for the procedure and performs surgical counts with the circulating RN according to policy.
• Maintains an organized sterile field and ensures the sterility of the field by taking corrective action as needed. Assists with the placement of sterile drapes. Provides instruments and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure and maintains aseptic technique.
• Retrieves and collects specimens and labels specimens appropriately and correctly.
• Reports any implanted devices, catheters, drains, and packing to the circulator.
• Provides complete case preparation and knows, with the ability to adapt, of special instruments, supplies, and equipment needs for patient populations.
• Demonstrates knowledge of patient's rights and responsibilities according to the patient's age and understanding.
• Demonstrates understanding of patient's Advance Directives.
• Assists in CPR as needed.
• Assists with pre and post-procedure cleaning of the operative or invasive procedure room and necessary instruments.

The Surgical Assistant serves in the assistant role in the provision of care to patients undergoing a surgical procedure under the supervision of the provider in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and within the policies, procedures, and guidelines of the organization. The Surgical Assistant is an entry-level practitioner and focused on learning and growing in this role.
Essential Functions:
Performs surgical hand scrub, gowning, and gloving according to policy. Routinely functions as first or second assist on assigned cases. Functions in the Surgical Tech capacity fulfilling the scrub role as assigned, demonstrating knowledge and implementation of sterile technique. Checks all instruments to ensure they are in proper working order prior to use. Assists with sponge, sharps, and instrument counts per policy and procedures. Handles specimens in accordance with hospital policy and procedure.
Protects patient information based on hospital policy and government regulations to assure information is kept confidential. Participates in unit and hospital efforts to reduce adverse patient care events. Actively participates in the Universal Protocol procedures that assure correct site surgery.
Communicates effectively with the circulating nurse upon observance of any missing or malfunctioning instruments and/or indication of any compromise to sterility. Reports any implants device, catheters, drains and packing circulator.
Assists with OR case preparation: Utilizes surgeon's preference list to procure equipment and arrange proper placement in the OR; Utilizes aseptic technique when establishing the sterile field, opening supplies and instruments; Assists with monitoring and maintaining the sterile field.
Assists with patient positioning, skin clipping and prepping, foley catheterization and draping.
Under the direct observation of the surgeon, may: Insert secondary trocars; Place instruments through trocars; Utilize power equipment and stapling devices (other than skin stapling); Inject infiltration local anesthetic medications excluding Exparel. During surgical procedures: Use sponges and suction; Cauterization processes; Appropriately place and manipulate retractors (with or without padding); Irrigate the wound site(s); Cut suture material, handle hemostats, and tie suture; Provides assistance securing drains to tissue. Closes the surgical wound: May assist suture closing of fascia layer under the direct observation of the surgeon; Sutures the subcutaneous tissues and skin including with the use of a skin stapler if needed. Applies appropriate wound dressings, including medicated dressings.

Job Summary:
The Surgical Assistant serves in the assistant role in the provision of care to patients undergoing a surgical procedure under the supervision of the provider in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and within the policies, procedures, and guidelines of the organization. The Surgical Assistant is an entry-level practitioner and focused on learning and growing in this role.
Essential Functions:
Performs surgical hand scrub, gowning, and gloving according to policy. Routinely functions as first or second assist on assigned cases. Functions in the Surgical Tech capacity fulfilling the scrub role as assigned, demonstrating knowledge and implementation of sterile technique. Checks all instruments to ensure they are in proper working order prior to use. Assists with sponge, sharps, and instrument counts per policy and procedures. Handles specimens in accordance with hospital policy and procedure.
Protects patient information based on hospital policy and government regulations to assure information is kept confidential. Participates in unit and hospital efforts to reduce adverse patient care events. Actively participates in the Universal Protocol procedures that assure correct site surgery.
Communicates effectively with the circulating nurse upon observance of any missing or malfunctioning instruments and/or indication of any compromise to sterility. Reports any implants device, catheters, drains and packing circulator.
Assists with OR case preparation: Utilizes surgeon's preference list to procure equipment and arrange proper placement in the OR; Utilizes aseptic technique when establishing the sterile field, opening supplies and instruments; Assists with monitoring and maintaining the sterile field.
Assists with patient positioning, skin clipping and prepping, foley catheterization and draping.
Under the direct observation of the surgeon, may: Insert secondary trocars; Place instruments through trocars; Utilize power equipment and stapling devices (other than skin stapling); Inject infiltration local anesthetic medications excluding Exparel. During surgical procedures: Use sponges and suction; Cauterization processes; Appropriately place and manipulate retractors (with or without padding); Irrigate the wound site(s); Cut suture material, handle hemostats, and tie suture; Provides assistance securing drains to tissue. Closes the surgical wound: May assist suture closing of fascia layer under the direct observation of the surgeon; Sutures the subcutaneous tissues and skin including with the use of a skin stapler if needed. Applies appropriate wound dressings, including medicated dressings.
