Position Overview
The Correctional Officer performs security and custodial duties, supervising and maintaining control of Individuals in Custody's movement and activities on an assigned shift, giving direction and making decisions as required, referring non-routine decisions to the superior officer, as well as enforcing and maintaining disciplinary, safety, sanitary, security and custodial measures. The Correctional Officer position is a vital position for the custody, control, and safety of all IDOC facilities. Job Responsibilities
Maintains orderly conduct of visitors and individuals in custody.
Serves as the tower officer.
Serves as a writ officer certifying safety and security of the individual in custody being escorted on writ.
Serves as an inter/outer patrol officer. Makes routine patrols of the perimeter areas checking for contraband, unauthorized person and security breaches.
Completes disciplinary and incident reports on individuals in custody.
Enforces, maintains discipline, safety, sanitation, security and custodial measures in all areas of assignment.
Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonable within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years high school.
Requires the successful completion of an approved correctional officer training program.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefers working knowledge and understanding of the methods and objects of discipline required to handle persons under restraint.
Prefers the ability to enforce and maintain discipline, safety, sanitations, security, and custodial measures.

Performs routine correctional work involving the care and custody of inmates. Work involves the direct supervision of inmate work groups in their daily assigned duties; preventing escapes; and maintaining discipline in conformance with strict rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
A. Receives on-the-job training while working at the assigned facility with experienced correctional officers and under the general supervision of supervisors.
B. Searches for contraband and provides security; counts, feeds, and supervises inmates in housing, work, and other areas accessed by stairs; and performs security of various assigned areas involving long periods of sitting and standing, climbing stairs and ladders to reach assigned areas, and working at heights.
C. Provides custody and security of inmates including observing actions of inmates, squatting and bending to conduct "pat" and "strip" searches of inmates, restraining and securing sometimes assaultive inmates, and transferring and transporting inmates by walking or riding in various vehicles such as trailers, vans, buses, and other forms of transportation.
D. Supervises and provides security of inmates performing technical skills such as construction, maintenance, laundry, food service, and in varied industrial and agricultural operations which involve climbing stairs and ladders and climbing around the inside or outside of buildings; works outdoors and indoors without air conditioning; works around motorized or moving equipment and machinery; and is subject to all types of weather.
E. Ability to work protracted, irregular, and overtime hours as required; must be willing to travel and work at other facilities as needed; responds to emergencies, including climbing stairs and ladders while searching for escaped inmates, hearing calls for and calling for help, giving first aid at the emergency site, carrying an injured or unconscious inmate or employee various distances to safety up or down stairs and ladders; and uses force and deadly force, including the use of chemical agents or firearms, to control inmates.
F. Reads, reviews, and properly applies information found in inmate records which is related to the inmate's health and safety and to the security of the facility; provides leadership and technical guidance to other staff; complies with policies, procedures, rules, and regulations; enforces inmate disciplinary rules; and prepares and maintains records, forms, and reports.

Nature of Work The fundamental reason the classification exists is to provide the safe custody, detention, treatment and rehabilitation of adult inmates in the Municipal Jail. Trainees must complete the two-week Jail Management course within the six-month probationary period. During that time, employees are assigned to work with a training officer. Upon successful completion of the probationary period, which includes completion of the Jail Management course, the Trainee will attain permanent status and be appointed to the Municipal Jail Corrections Officer (MJCO) classification. Major work functions of the class are: patrolling cell blocks, securing and delivering items to inmates; observing and directing inmates in work assignments; processing inmates; and enforcing department rules and regulations. Work is performed in accordance with established department and state standards and guidelines under the general supervision of a Municipal Jail Corrections Sergeant. Nature of Work
The fundamental reason that the Corrections Officer exists is to secure inmates in the Montgomery Detention Facility. A Corrections Officer's duties range from periods of physical inactivity to situations requiring extreme physical exertion and may involve an element of danger. Employees must be able to act without immediate supervision and exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies. Specific work assignments are made by a Corrections Sergeant or other supervisor and performance is checked through personal inspections and review of oral and written reports. Work responsibilities for Corrections Officers are based upon assignment which may include all or some of the following: learning to perform duties, performing intake, preparing inmates for transport and possibly transporting inmates, controlling and monitoring booth, searching inmate cells, performing rover duties, completing documentation, responding to emergency situations, performing visitation duties, operating central control, and performing administrative duties.
Minimum Qualifications
A High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate is required. High school diplomas must be from accredited high schools. Correspondence or mail order high school diplomas are not accepted.

Special Requirements Applicants must be 19 years of age at the time of appointment. Individuals who have a POST-C certification from the Alabama Peace Officer's Standards and Training Commission will be hired into the Corrections Officer classification. They serve a six-month probationary period during which they receive six weeks of on-the-job training. Individuals who do not have the certification will be hired into the Corrections Officer Trainee classification in probationary status. They attend a two week jail management class and six weeks of on-the-job training with the first six (6) months. Upon successful completion of the training period, individuals are appointed to the Corrections Officer classification and serve a six-month probation.
Applicants who are offered employment will be required to undergo a medical examination by a physician designated by the appointing authority and successfully complete a physical agility test, drug test, and thorough background investigation prior to being employed. Employees must have and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license. Officers are trained in and must be certified in the use of the following: pepper spray or Mace, Strategic Self-defense & Grappling Tactics (SSGT), and CPR. E-Team members are required to be taser certified.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works within secured facility with inmates of various classifications (i.e., minimum security to maximum security). May be required to physically restrain or subdue inmates. May be exposed to strong odors, foul language, and harassment from inmates. Required to enforce personal hygiene of inmates.
