Under the general supervision of the Lieutenant- Public Safety, performs routine and supervisory law enforcement and security work in the protection of people and in the safeguarding of University property. Incumbent participates and supervises subordinate staff in the securing of assigned property against possible loss or damage and is charged with insuring the safety of all individuals on campus. Work is reviewed through conferences and reports for compliance with established policies, procedures and guidelines. Performs other duties as requested.
Normal Work Schedule: 1800 - 0600 Rotating Shifts

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

+ Assigns, directs, supervises subordinate staff; assists in maintaining work schedules and timesheets. Notifies the Public Safety Chain of Command on all issues requiring employee disciplinary matters/action.

+ Patrols/makes rounds of assigned area by foot, cart or vehicle; watches for unauthorized persons or activities; investigates and reports unusual instances to supervisor; calls for assistance if necessary.

+ Issues university information; escorts Stetson community members to and from buildings and parking lots.

+ Works closely with local law enforcement agencies and fire departments.

+ Maintains first aid kits and keeps them in ready to use order; performs emergency first aid when necessary.

+ Prepares reports: complaint reports, incident reports, accident reports, theft reports. alarm reports and daily log reports.

+ Must be familiar with the fundamental operation of Fire Alarms and Fire Alarm Systems.

Minimum Education: HS Diploma/GED or equivalent combination of training and experience

+ Knowledge of the structure and function of the University

+ Knowledge of State, county and local laws, rules, and ordinances

+ Knowledge of University policies and procedures

+ Ability to follow a chain-of-command

+ Ability to withstand the physical challenges of the position to include performing routine and special duties in inclement weather

Required Experience

+ High school diploma or GED; supplemented by law enforcement or security experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience

+ Must possess a State of Florida "Class D" security license, or be willing to pursue and secure such certification (State of Florida Chapter 493) within 90 days of employment

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record as determined by the University's auto insurance carrier.

Job Summary:

Responsible for all security and control related functions during duty shift per management instructions. Seeks to provide maximum facility coordination in prisoner supervision and safety.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

* Supervises all security functions during shift as assigned by management.
* Supervises the feeding of inmates/detainees during meal time.
* Makes routine inspections of all security equipment, doors, gates, fences, lighting systems, and other facility equipment as needed.
* Assists staff with unit counts.
* Reviews reports written by officers during shift and ensures these reports are submitted as required.
* Assures that officers receive on-the-job training and safety training as required.
* Inspects or directs work to inspection of perimeter to test alarm systems, detect safety hazards and to ensure safety rules are posted and enforced.
* Assists officers and staff with unruly inmates and other assignments as required. Investigates and reports causes of inmate/detainee disturbances.
* Responds to major unusual occurrences as trained. Facilitates prompt and appropriate assistance to detainees/inmates in the event of injury, illness or emotional trauma.
* Directs work, provides training and performs inspections of work performed by inmate/ detainee workers. Assures that inmate/detainee workers under security supervision receive safety training.
* Provides management with input into decisions concerning employee performance ratings, disciplinary actions, and job assignments.
* Promotes an atmosphere conducive to personality and character development of detainees/ inmates and staff through the encouragement of favorable behavior patterns, arrangement of physical facilities, and influencing relationships among detainees/inmates.
* Assists in review of staff effectiveness by conducting frequent physical inspections of the facility to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements

* High school diploma or equivalent certification required.
* Must meet the requirements of being a Correctional Officer.
* One (1) year of experience working in a correctional setting required.
* Must be flexible, intellectually alert, able to command the respect and confidence of detainees/inmates and staff, possess a working knowledge of correctional laws, applicable court orders and possess a high tolerance to mental stress.
* Must have a proven work history with sound abilities to write communications, documents, policy, court room defenses, contract negotiations, and other required written correspondence.
* Must be able to understand and carry out moderately complex oral and written instructions.
* Ability to coordinate staffing requirements for security supervisors and officers.
* Must have completed an approved training program resulting in a certificate of satisfactory completion. Ability to obtain certification for training such as CPR, First Aid and firearms.

What you get to do:

As a Sergeant, you will lead the Security Team through daily operation of the Park on both Operating and Non-Operating hours to ensure a safe atmosphere for our employees and guests. This position will balance Security/Law Enforcement practices with that of Safety including Medical Response procedures, Fire Prevention, and Incident Management. You will also:

Direct personnel involved in establishing and maintaining park security and property protection programs.

Directly supervise more than 36 security officers during an assigned shift in the Security Department.

Enthusiastically represents SeaWorld by displaying a positive attitude, high level of energy and commitment to quality throughout all aspects of the job.

Establish operational procedures for activities such as guarding and patrolling physical property, orienting and monitoring of personnel involved with classified information, and investigation of accidents and criminal acts.

Confer with representatives of management to formulate policies, determine need for programs, and coordinate programs with park activities.

Confer with representatives of local government to ensure cooperation and coordination of park activities with law enforcement agencies.

Track worked hours and reports labor expenses to Director of Security, and oversees area budget.

Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations' policies and applicable laws including interviewing, hiring and training team members; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining team members; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Ensure excellent customer service by responding to customer requirements, expectations, and needs.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: training team members, planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Other duties as assigned.

What it takes to succeed:

At least 18 years of age.

Have and maintain a valid driver's license. Out of state residents, students, active military and their dependents must have a valid driver's license and provide a copy of the DMV report from their state of residency.

C.P.R., First Aid, and Guard Card certifications.

At least 3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Able to obtain a Firearms permit.

Strong written/verbal communication skills.

Able to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment.

Able to stand and/or walk for prolonged periods of time.

Able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. with/without accommodations.

Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year College or technical school preferred.

At least 3 days of unrestricted availability to include weekends, holidays, early mornings and late evenings
