After serving in the military for four years, Gary Harmor attended and graduated from CSU Sacramento in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Forensic Science and minors in Chemistry and Biological Science. Gary was a Staff Research Associate at the University of California Berkeley from 1976 to 1977. In 1978, Gary Harmor started SERI with the late Brian Wraxall, where they spent the entire first year training 100 criminalists, from all over the country in newly researched serological electrophoresis methods (Group Systems). Gary has trained over 250 forensic serologists. The next 34 years were spent working cases in forensic biology and forensic DNA analysis. Positions held at SERI by Gary are Senior Forensic Serologist, Quality Assurance Manager, Chief Forensic Serologist and Assistant Laboratory Director. In 2011 Mr. Harmor became SERI’s Executive Director and is a Fellow of the American Board of Criminalistics in Forensic Biology with subspecialties in Forensic Biochemistry and Forensic Molecular Biology. He is also a member of the California Association of Criminalists, the Northwest Association of Forensic Scientists, the California Association of Crime Laboratory Directors (CACLD) and the Association of Forensic Quality Assurance Managers (AFQAM). Mr. Harmor has also been qualified as an expert in both forensic serology and forensic DNA and has testified in hundreds of cases in 22 states, including over 20 counties in California alone, as well as in federal and military courts. He is experienced in all aspects of forensic serology, biological screening methods and HLADQα, Polymarker, ABO Genotyping, STR and YSTR DNA analysis.
