Job Summary The Facilities Electrician at MDRR is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing a wide range of electrical systems and equipment to ensure the safe and efficient operation of facility infrastructure. This role includes the need to read and interpret blueprints, schematic drawings, and specifications for electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electronic equipment control systems, performing preventative maintenance, and ensuring all work complies with local, state, and national electrical codes (like NFPA 70E) and safety standards like Lockout/Tagout (LOTO). The position requires experience with equipment such as motors, transformers, VFDs, and control panels, as well as the ability to inspect, diagnose system issues, document/report, and perform repairs and installations. Collaboration and good communication skills are a must to ensure effective problem-solving and smooth operations. Additional responsibilities include supervising contractors, mentoring staff, operating treatment systems, and supporting general facility maintenance. Flexibility for after-hours and emergency work is essential. Essential Job Functions Install, maintain, and repair facility electrical systems, including wiring, lighting, motors, panels, and control systems. Diagnose and troubleshoot pneumatic, hydraulic, and electronic equipment issues. Support the installation of new equipment and execution of electrical system upgrades. Conduct routine inspections to identify potential failures and ensure system reliability. Perform corrective maintenance using hand tools, power tools, construction equipment, and electrical testing instruments. Respond promptly to urgent maintenance requests, including after-hours or emergency calls. Follow all Cal/OSHA, NEC, and company safety standards, including strict adherence to Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and Confined Space Entry procedures. Ensure all electrical work complies with regulatory codes and company standards. Consistently wear and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE). Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and parts used. Document system modifications, inspections, and project updates as required. Participate in electrical project reviews and assist in developing scope and plans for electrical components. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 10+ years of heavy industrial electrical experience, preferably in the waste management or similar industry. Strong background in VFDs, motors, transformers, and low- and mid-voltage systems. Familiarity with mechanical systems and how they interact with electrical components. Completion of an accredited electrician apprenticeship or technical training program. Valid electrician license or journeyman/master certification preferred. Deep understanding of electrical theory, NEC, and safe industrial work practices. Proficient in reading blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, and construction drawings. Ability to diagnose and repair complex electrical issues using testing tools. Experience working with low-voltage systems and knowledge of mid-voltage power stations is a plus. CEF provides electricity for the majority of the university's main campus via a 100MW substation, which is about twice the current campus load. Electricity at the substation is transformed from 60 kilovolts (kV) down to 12kV, which can then be distributed as high voltage electric power to campus. The campus electrical distribution system is a largely underground system of 12kV and 4kV cables and switches. Typically, power from multiple sources is brought into individual buildings after being stepped down to 480 volts. Load centers within the buildings step the voltage down to normal service voltages and distribute it to loads throughout the building, with backup emergency power available for all vital loads. The Energy Operations team manages installation, operation, and maintenance of the electrical distribution infrastructure. A Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system provides real-time information and diagnostics of the campus to monitor the power flow throughout the network, allowing for quick response to system faults. **Job Purpose:** Employees in this classification perform journey level and high voltage electrician work involved with the installation, maintenance, operation and repair of the electrical substations, electrical distribution systems, and general low voltage utility controls under general supervision.
