5 Common Career Paths For a Service Technician

Technician

Technicians are skilled professionals who primarily work with technology in different industries. They are knowledgeable about the technical aspects of the various items they work with. They are usually working with electricity or with technological advancements. Technicians may be assigned to do the construction of equipment or materials related to their field of study. They may also be assigned to conduct diagnostics and other maintenance activities to ensure that the equipment works properly. Technicians may also be required to conduct basic repairs in case of problems. It is important that technicians have good analytical skills and decision-making skills.

Maintenance Technician

Maintenance technicians are technicians who specialize in the preservation of office facilities. They have in-depth knowledge of how various office equipment or fixtures work so that they can immediately identify how to repair them in case of breakdowns. Maintenance technicians perform diagnostics and routine maintenance activities to ensure that everything in the office is running well. They immediately repair problems in fixtures or equipment to avoid any further damages or safety concerns. They should be familiar with occupational safety and health standards to ensure that the office is a safe place to work.

Field Service Technician

Field service technicians are skilled professionals who manage the technical needs of their clients outside the company's physical office space. They are usually on the field to visit their clients and check up on clients' equipment. Field service technicians are dispatched to provide technical support. They oversee installations, repairs, or maintenance activities. They ensure that all the work needed is done well. They also conduct diagnostic activities and troubleshooting. Field service technicians also supervise any updating or changes needed to be done in their clients' offices. They are expected to have good analytical skills, communication skills, and highly technical skills.

Foreman

A foreman is a skilled worker in the construction industry, usually a tenured or experienced construction worker. The construction site's foremen act as the bridge between construction supervisors and construction workers. The foreman is responsible for communicating instructions from supervisors, ensuring that all workers on site are assigned tasks, and ensuring that tasks are completed within the timeline. The foreman is also responsible for checking the quality of the work the workers are doing on-site, managing workers' schedules, and budgeting for needed materials. It is important that a foreman is responsible, trustworthy, and personable.

Electrician

An electrician is a skilled tradesman in charge of wirings and systems which provide electric power to a facility. They are trained to design, install, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical wiring systems. There are four basic types of an electrician - residential wiremen, inside wiremen, telecommunications electrician, and outside linemen. Some work on a standard 40-hour week shift while others are on-call duty. In some cases, traveling is also a vital key to their role where they would work for a few days before moving to another location.

Illustrated Career Paths For a Service Technician

Service Technician FAQs

Is field service technician a good job?

Yes, field service technician is a good job. Whether it is a good job for you depends on your individual strengths and expectations for your career path. For example, a career as a field service technician is vanishingly unlikely to provide a six-figure salary.

If this is a necessity for you, a career as a field service technician may not be the right path. If you struggle to be productive in a less structured work environment, again, you may not find the career of a field service technician all that fulfilling.

However, if you thrive on a flexible schedule, enjoy fixing things, have decent technical skills, and would be comfortable earning between $40,000 per year and $70,000 per year, a career as a field service technician may be perfect for you.

Field service technicians must be comfortable dealing with customers, and as such, must have good interpersonal communication skills. They may also be expected to work on an unconventional or inconsistent schedule.

These skill sets speak to the importance of improvisational ability and adaptability in the field service technician profession.

Additionally, for individuals with little higher education, or little interest in pursuing higher education, a career as a field service technician may be just the opportunity to play to their strengths.

Learn more about this question

What do field service technicians make?

Field service technicians make between $40,000 per year and $70,000 per year. A salary of approximately $55,000 is fairly typical. The salary that one can earn as a field service technician may depend on the technical skills one has, as well as experience and certifications.

Because field service technicians often perform technical tasks, such as repairs and maintenance, the array of industries that they may service is predictably broad. So, for field service technicians working with vastly different industries, salaries may differ as well.

Additionally, field service technicians are not generally expected to have much more education than a high school diploma. This, even, is not always required.

A field service technician may increase their earning potential by completing technical certifications in various relevant skills. This would demonstrate their proficiency in these skills to prospective employers and increase their value as workers.
