1956

Doctor Shaklee started the direct-sales company in San Francisco in 1956 and ran it with his two sons.

In 1956, Shaklee founded the Shaklee Corporation with his two sons to manufacture nutritional supplements.

1957

The following year, in 1957, VITA LEA in tablet form was added to the product line.

1961

1961 Shaklee introduced Instant Protein, one of the first soy protein isolate in the world.

In 1971, the company opened a new research facility, the Forrest C. Shaklee Research Center, in Hayward, California.

1972

1972 Shaklee introduced one of the first biodegradable laundry detergents in the world, which contains no phosphate, nitrate and borate.

The company changed its name to its current form in 1972 and went public the next year.

1972 – “Shaklee Products” was renamed “SHAKLEE CORPORATION”

1973

In 1973, Shaklee Corporation became a publicly-held company on the stock exchange.

1975

1975 … Shaklee Japan was established

1976

The dispute was made all the more bitter by the fact that the competitor in question was Enhance, a health food company that had been founded by Robert J. Wooten shortly after he resigned as chairman and president of Shaklee in 1976.

1977

1977 Shaklee listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

1978

In 1978, the company sued former distributors Franklin and El Marie Gunnell for more than $1.6 million, charging that the Utah couple had illegally defamed Shaklee's products and interfered with its business relationships after signing on with a rival company.

1980

In 1985, the company suffered a great loss when Doctor Forrest Shaklee died at the age of 91.

1986

The corporation began to diversify in November 1986 when it purchased the Bear Creek Corporation, a direct marketing company best known for its Harry and David Fruit-of-the-Month Club operation, from RJR Nabisco for $123 million.

1988 - Shaklee Malaysia was established

1989

In February 1989, Shaklee sold its 78 percent interest in Shaklee Japan to the Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Company for $350 million, while maintaining its licensing agreement and continuing to collect royalty payments from the Japanese operations.

In March 1989, Shaklee Corporation received an unsolicited acquisition proposal from a group led by Irwin L. Jacobs, the Minneapolis financier known also by his nickname "Irv the Liquidator". Analysts placed the leveraged buyout value of Shaklee at $35 a share.

1989 Shaklee provided financial and nutrition support for the trans-Antarctica expedition led by Will Steger, the first crossing of Antarctica on foot, covering 3700 miles.

1990

1990 Shaklee’s non-toxic and biodegradable Basic-H® is chosen as one of the first official Earth Day products.

1991

1991 Shaklee Household Cleaner s and Personal Care Products are selected to be used in the Biosphere 2 Project in Arizona.

1991 Shaklee introduced Basic-D®, one of the first phosphate-free automatic dishwashing detergents.

1992 Shaklee Cares®, a non-profit organization is established and committed to helping people directly affected by natural disasters and emergencies, as well as grass-roots citizen groups working in the impacted areas.

1992 – Shaklee household cleaners and personal care products were used in the Biosphere 2 (a World Renowned Environmental Project) in Arizona

1993

1993 Shaklee started to provide NASA astronauts a customized rehydration beverage, AstroAide.

In 1994 the company loaded its calendar with events commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Doctor Forrest Shaklee.

In 1994: First Woman to Run across Canada was … Powered by Shaklee Jo Wells, 44 year old woman from Burlington, Ontario, was the first woman to run completely across Canada from island to island.

1995

1995 Shaklee provided financial and nutrition support for the third International Arctic Project led by Will Steger, the first surface crossing of the 2500 mile wide Arctic Ocean.

1996

1996 Shaklee powered world class athletes won 8 gold medals in Atlanta Olympics.

The company's 1996 sales had reached almost $4 billion, and the following year the company broke ground with a kiko-shiki ceremony on the first part of a three-phase construction project expanding its manufacturing facility in Oklahoma.

1997

The new Yamanouchi-Shaklee Pharmaceutical Research Center, opened in November 1997, began a close creative and financial relationship between Yamanouchi and Stanford University and forwarded Yamanouchi's plans for expanding into healthcare products.

In an unforeseen diversification in 1997, Shaklee joined with AT & T to sell the latter's phone services directly to consumers through Shaklee's 500,000 independent sales agents.

1998

1998 Shaklee introduced the nutrition-based skin care lines, supported by 8 patterns and a million dollars in clinical studies.

The facility, once completed in 1998, became Yamanouchi's first United States-based pharmaceutical manufacturing plant.

1999

Yamanouchi-Shaklee Pharma, the new pharmaceutical division, was spun off in 1999, as Yamanouchi Pharma Technologies Inc., a separate entity.

2000

2000 Shaklee became the first company in the world to obtain the Climate Neutral™ certification, which certified that Shaklee totally offset its CO2 emissions, resulting in net zero impact on the environment.

In the spring of 2000, the company relocated its headquarters from downtown San Francisco to a new complex in suburban Pleasanton.

2004

In April 2004, Yamanouchi sold Shaklee Corporation to American multi-millionaire Roger Barnett, managing partner of Activated Holdings LLC and a member of the Wolfson family, for $310 million.

2004 Shaklee powered world class athletes won 15 gold medals in Athens Olympics.

2007 Shaklee became the first company in the world to offset its carbon emissions by providing sustainable energy to villages in Africa in partnership with Millennium Promise.

Sir Richard Branson, world adventurer and outspoken environmentalist, accompanied Will Steger in 2007 on the 1,200 mile expedition on Baffin Island.
