Sharp company history timeline

2005

In December 2005, the electronic desktop calculator first commercialized by Sharp was recognized with a prestigious IEEE Milestone*1 from the IEEE*2, a worldwide electrical and electronics engineering society.

2006

With the April 2006 start of One-Seg mobile broadcasts ushering in an era of on-the-go TV and image viewing, the 905SH became an instant hit by putting the beautiful reception of Sharp's renowned AQUOS LCD TV technology into people's hands wherever they went.

2007

Sharp develops a 108V-inch LCD TV that it shows at the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

2008

In 2008 Sharp collaborated with Emblaze Mobile on the Monolith, “…an ambitious project to design the ultimate holistic mobile device”. The project was never brought to market.

2009

On 25 June 2009, Sharp and Pioneer agreed to form a joint venture comprising their optical businesses, called “Pioneer Digital Design and Manufacturing Corporation”.

Worldwide production of Sharp document systems has grown steadily since, with production surpassing 15 million units at the end of 2009.

2010

2012

In March 2012 the Taiwan-based electronics company Foxconn|Hon Hai(commonly known as Foxconn) agreed to acquire a 10 percent stake in Sharp Corporation for US$806 million, and to purchase up to 50 percent of the LCD displays produced at Sharp’s plant in Sakai, Japan.

Sharp and Italy’s largest power company, Enel SpA (Enel), agree to establish a joint venture to operate as an independent power producer (IPP). As such, they plan to develop a number of solar power plants with a total capacity of 189 MW by the end of 2012.

2014

In June 2014 in Japan, the NexTV-F (Next Generation Television & Broadcasting Promotion Forum) began broadcasting 4K trial broadcasts on 124/128° CS digital broadcasting, but to watch these broadcasts users require a compatible HEVC decoder*3 and a tuner for SKY PerfecTV’s Premium Service.

2015

Not compatible with external device input of 8K resolution (video) or receiving of 8K broadcast. *3 As of May 21, 2015; for commercially available 4K LCD TVs with an 8K upscaling circuit. *4 Compared to Sharp's LC-40H20 HDTV (released in February 2015).

The hotel opened on July 17, 2015.

2017

To bring this cold-retention material to market, in March 2017 Sharp formed an in-house venture business called TEKION LAB. Tekion means “ideal temperature” in Japanese.

2018

Maintaining its status as leaders in the market, Sharp releases the first 70” 8K professional display, the LV-70X500E, in May 2018.

2019

2020

In February 2020, when masks were in extremely short supply in Japan, Sharp answered a call for help from the Japanese government and began production in March 2020.

In September 2020, Sharp added the MA-1050S, smaller masks for women and upper grade elementary school students. For example, in December 2020 Sharp launched its MA-R230 and MA-R230S periodic mask delivery service for shipping masks to customers at regular intervals.
