1938

The Shelly Company got its beginnings when Charles J. Shelly founded his construction Company in 1938.

After several years learning the business and its contracting practices, he started his own company in 1938.

1944

Founded in 1944, the first SHELLY & SANDS, Inc. asphalt plant was named Mar-Zane, in recognition of its Marietta-Zanesville roots.

1946

The first aggregate operation was purchased for $45,000 in 1946 and named the Muskingum River Gravel Company for the rich reserves along the Muskingum River.

1961

In 1961, the Company obtained its first portable asphalt plant, ushering in a new era for the expanding Company.

1963

By 1963, The Shelly Company had become an established contractor and asphalt producer in the Central Ohio area.

1985

The company’s footprint continued to expand, and by 1985, 24 subsidiary companies had merged under the Shelly umbrella.
