On February 13, 1889, with the help of her sewing circle and a few friends, she realized her dream in the form of a free acute hospital – Sheltering Arms Hospital.
Founded on February 13th 1889, Sheltering Arms was originally run entirely by volunteers.
By 1894 the free hospital moved to Clay Street, near what is now VCU. Here they cemented themselves as a fixture of the community.
The historic chapel, preserved to the present day, was built in 1922.
Continually searching for ways to better serve the healthcare needs of the community, in 1981 Sheltering Arms became the first free-standing physical rehabilitation hospital in Virginia.
In 1982, the Sheltering Arms board decided to close the school, sell the property and use the revenue to support programs for children and families.
Construction began in 1983.
Since 1983, the Foundation has awarded over 1,200 grants, totaling over $16 million.
The first Members moved into Becketwood in the spring of 1986.
In 1992, Becketwood became an independent Member-owned cooperative corporation.
Published in honor of Sheltering Arms’ 125th anniversary, the book chronicles the healthcare institution’s growth from humble beginnings in a donated house in downtown Richmond to a nationally recognized physical rehabilitation leader in 2014.
