Sherman High School company history timeline

1879

The school was created as one of Sherman's first three public schools in 1879.

1901

1901---Sherman 5, Denison 5 (tie)

1902

September 1, 1902, school opened for the first time with a full complement of students.

SCROUNGERS. First school equipment in 1902 included scrounged dry goods boxes which served as desks and dining room seats.

1902---Denison 0, Sherman 0 (tie)

1903

March 3, 1903 marked the official opening.

1904

1904---Denison 1, Sherman 0 (forfeit)

1915

Sherman High School was established by special election in June 1915, by authority given to the old Sherman District Board of Education.

1916

Before this new venture in the educational program could be made effective, there came a great flood on August 9, 1916, which washed away many homes, some school building and business establishments.

1917

The United States entered the First World War on April 6, 1917.

1920

Fred Douglass School was built in 1920

1921

By 1921, the citizens began to sense a need for a high school.

1924

In the fall of 1924 Sherman High School began its first year of instruction under the excellent direction of Olin C. Nutter as principal, and Miss Dora Atkinson as teacher.

Since the first year in 1924 many new courses such as chemistry, typing, shorthand, and office practice, physics, journalism, music, higher mathematics, and driver education has been added to the curriculum.

1925

The largest margin of victory occurred in 1925 when the score was Sherman 78, Denison 0.

1926

The school�s transportation system began in the fall of 1926 when two fifty passenger busses were purchased by the Board of Education.

1926---Denison 1, Sherman 0 (forfeit)

1927

The first graduation call in 1927 consisted of seven members.

1929

Each year thereafter another grade was added until it became a six year first class high school in 1929.

1930

On July 1, 1930, a bond issue of $125,000 was authorized to construct a gymnasium-auditorium and additional classrooms.

Contracts were let and construction began on a new building to be completed at Whitesville in 1930.

1938

A post office branch was established on campus, and in 1938, room was added for this purpose.

1939

The school grew rapidly and by 1939 plans for expansion were necessary.

1941

1941---Sherman 7, Denison 7 (tie)

1943

1943---Sherman 7, Denison 7 (tie)

In 1943, educational improvements began to take place.

1944

1944---Sherman 6, Denison 6 (tie)

1949

The first game for the actual ax was played in 1949.

1961

1961---Sherman 0, Denison 0 (tie)

1970

Sherman began to grow, necessitating enlargement of office space of the administration building in 1933, 1938, and 1960. It remained in operation until Indian Day, September 1970, when the museum was officially opened in it’s place.

A new high school was built in the late 1970's and Seth Grade School was changed to a Junior High School.

2008

In the summer of 2008, Sherman ISD began rennovations and on August 25, 2008, the school became Fred Douglass Early Childhood Center housing the Pre-kindergarten Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD), Head Start and Pre-kindergarten.

2017

To date (2017) there have been 8 ties, 43 victories for Denison and 68 victories for Sherman.
