Introduction to the V-BATSecuring borders, hunting drugs, finding threats. Shield AI's V-BAT is the future of tactical UAS today. Nothing else in the world like it, V-BAT is the next-generation UAS. In head-to-head customer fly-offs, V-BAT wins. The U.S. and allied militaries are choosing V-BAT because it delivers, period.
The true differentiator between V-BAT and the rest is its patented ducted fan design. V-BAT's duct increases thrust by 80%+ at equivalent engine power, enabling take-off and landing with a single power plant and achieving unmatched payload mass friction. It can fly for a half day or stop and hover for hours on end. Most importantly, thrust vectoring bestows V-BAT with unmatched control authority for rock-solid stability in high winds and challenging weather - whether taking off, landing, flying forward, or in a transition state.
V-BAT is designed explicitly for runway and equipment-independent launch and recovery in austere environments with no external support. The aircraft can be transported in the bed of a truck and assembled by two personnel in under 20 minutes, making it a true expeditionary system built for dynamic movement and fluid mission sets. Job Description V-Bat Air Vehicle Operators (Level 1-5) perform flight operations, testing, training, demonstrations, and maintenance in CONUS and OCONUS environments depending on customer requirements. Candidates must be willing to become proficient in a variety of V-Bat specific AVO skills based on the unique demands of the position for which they are applying.
Six different teams and opportunities you could work for:
Deployed Operations - AVOs support DoD and foreign customers in an operational capacity during maritime and land-based OCONUS deployments.
Training/Instructor - AVOs develop and teach programs of instruction based on an institutional and operational knowledge of the V-Bat system and air vehicle operations.

Production Flight Testing - AVOs test newly produced V-Bat systems and rely on pilot and maintenance skills to ensure quality control and fleet readiness.
Engineering Research & Development - AVOs perform research and development flights and push the boundaries of innovation in the unmanned air vehicle space.
Support SME - The UAS Support SME will delight customers (internal and external) by providing advanced (L2) troubleshooting and support for issues encountered in the field. In addition to serving as link between our engineers and our customers, this role will assist in documenting and developing a robust knowledge base including troubleshooting guides, system FAQs, and training support materials.
Experimental Flight Testing/R&D - Operators will collaborate with engineering teams to execute integration, ground tests, and flight tests, ensuring seamless interactions between various components and systems of the V-Bat UAV platform. They will provide regular and insightful feedback to flight test engineers, flight control engineers, propulsion engineers, ground control station development engineers, technical directors, and product managers. Your inputs will be crucial in refining and enhancing the platform's performance. This role will also contribute to the development of comprehensive training materials, Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and technical documentation. Lastly, you will actively participate in brainstorming sessions and discussions on improvements, optimizations, and innovations for the V-Bat platform. Your insights will contribute to its growth and evolution and help pave the way for the effective utilization and maintenance of current and future variants of the V-Bat system.

Over 10 weeks, the intern will build a Facility Design Readiness packet for XBAT: consolidate inputs across MFG, Test, EHS, Quality, and Supply Chain; map material flow and adjacencies; draft good/better/best layout options with clear assumptions; and create a lightweight capacity model tied to headcount/shift scenarios. They'll stand up a risk & long-lead tracker (permits, utilities, critical equipment) and a simple readiness dashboard (e.g., layout option maturity, long-lead exposure, decision latency). The output is a concise Gate Pre-Read (charter, options, risks, metrics, and recommended decisions) that informs leadership a few months ahead of the next program gate. Project Goals & Deliverables:
Project Objectives:
De-risk early XBAT facility planning by clarifying requirements, mapping material flow/adjacencies, and quantifying capacity vs. demand/shift scenarios ahead of the next gate.
Establish a lightweight, repeatable toolkit (templates, capacity model, risk/long-lead tracker, readiness dashboard) that the team can adopt post-internship without changing current deliverables or procurement.
Project impact on the business/team:
Improves pre-gate decision quality and reduces iteration cycles by surfacing long-lead exposures and capacity constraints early.
Creates a single source of truth that aligns MFG, Test, EHS, Quality, and Supply Chain with clear owners, definitions, and cadenced updates.
How this supports the intern's specific career path:
Builds practical skills in facilities planning, capacity modeling, cross-functional stakeholder management, and risk control in a real manufacturing program.
Produces portfolio-ready artifacts (layout options, metric dictionary, dashboard, readout) and experience presenting to engineering and leadership audiences.
Project deliverables:
Intermediate milestones: Wk2-Discovery & Charter v0.5; Wk4-Material-flow map + “good/better/best” layout options v0.5; Wk6-Capacity+takt model v0.8 + risk/long-lead tracker v0.8 + readiness dashboard prototype; Wk8-Integrated v0.9 set after pilot feedback.
Final (Wk10): Facility Design Readiness Packet & Gate Pre-Read (slides + appendix) including Charter v1.0, three annotated layout options with assumptions/tradeoffs, capacity model with 2-3 demand/shift scenarios, risk & long-lead register with owners/dates, readiness dashboard v1.0, and a handoff README/backlog.
Required qualifications:
Facility planning fundamentals: material flow mapping, basic layout trade-offs.
Capacity modeling in spreadsheets: pivots, scenario analysis, goal seek, clear metric definitions & assumptions.
Risk management basics: building/maintaining a risk & long-lead register with triggers, owners, and mitigations.
Stakeholder interviewing & synthesis: turning notes into crisp charters, RACIs, and decision logs.
Data hygiene & documentation: version control of docs, naming conventions, and reproducible calculations.
Dashboard/prototyping literacy: charts and simple KPIs in Excel/Sheets or Power BI/Tableau (non-production).
Clear written/visual communication: executive-ready slides, succinct status updates.
Professional cadence: meeting facilitation, follow-through on action items, and on-time milestone delivery.
KPIs & Milestones:
Wk 1 - Charter & Plan v0.5 approved: Sponsor sign-off on 1-2 page charter; timeline and access list confirmed (approval recorded).
Wk 2 - Discovery complete: ≥8 stakeholder interviews across MFG, Test, EHS, Quality, Supply Chain; notes centralized; coverage ≥90% of required roles.
Wk 4 - Material flow & Layout options v0.5: End-to-end flow map covering ≥90% of known steps; 3 “good/better/best” layouts with assumptions; review held with ≥3 functions; ≤5 open comments.
Wk 6 - Capacity model v0.8: 2-3 demand/shift scenarios; validation within ±10% vs SME back-of-envelope; metric dictionary v0.8; demo completed.
Wk 6 - Risk & Long-lead register v0.8: ≥15 items captured; ≥90% with owners/triggers/dates; long-lead visibility (lead time, need-by) for ≥80% identified criticals.
Wk 7 - Cadence pilot run: 1 full status/reporting cycle executed; meeting adherence ≥90%; action items closed within 3 business days.
Wk 8 - Integrated set v0.9: Updated layouts, model, and registers incorporating pilot feedback; comment burn-down to ≤3 minor issues.
Wk 9 - Gate Pre-Read dry run: 15-20 slide narrative tested with sponsor + ≥2 stakeholders; passes 10-point checklist (story, risks, asks, options, metrics).
Wk 10 - Final Readout & Handoff: Facility Design Readiness Packet v1.0 delivered; all artifacts versioned; README + next-step backlog; usefulness rating ≥4/5 from sponsor and ≥2 stakeholders.

In this role, you will be a hands-on technical leader, owning the full lifecycle of mission and avionics systems-from concept through flight testing and deployment-while improving the tools, processes, and engineering rigor that enable the team to be more effective and efficient. Help us save lives as we strive to deliver the most highly reliable aerospace hardware in the industry. What you'll do:
Architect, design, integrate, and validate avionics and mission sensors and payloads for V-BAT -from concept through production & deployment
Work directly with operators, mission SMEs, and internal stakeholders to understand user needs and prioritize system features and capabilities.
Drive 0→1 development: take loosely defined mission problems, propose solutions, prototype quickly, iterate with flight test data, and mature systems into production-ready capabilities.
Lead cross functional development: mechanical & electrical design, firmware/embedded interfaces, data paths, networking, and onboard software integration.
Debug and root-cause complex hardware, software, and integration failures throughout development and flight operations.
Lead hands-on bring-up, lab testing, HIL testing, and flight test preparation.
Support flight operations with real-time troubleshooting, anomaly resolution, and post-mission data analysis.

Proven experience taking systems from 0→1 and into fielded operational use.
Strong track record of establishing technical standards, improving processes, and elevating the performance of engineering teams.
Demonstrated leadership through technical execution, not just oversight-operating as a go-to problem solver on high-impact challenges.
Record of working hard, being a trustworthy teammate, holding yourself and others to high standards, and being kind to others.
Preferred qualifications:
Ownership of major avionics, payload, or mission systems from architecture through field deployment.
Experience leading field testing, flight line operations, or hardware-in-the-loop environments.
Experience building or improving internal engineering processes, documentation frameworks, or testing standards.
Track record of solving ambiguous, first-of-kind engineering problems with hands-on innovation.
Active Secret Clearance (or ability to obtain one).
