Shimadzu Corporation company history timeline

1875

In 1875, inspired with the idea of raising the profile of science in Japan, he left the family business and started to manufacture physical and chemical instruments for educational purposes in Kiyamachi-Nijo.

Founded in Kyoto 1875, Shimadzu Corporation has been supplying cutting-edge products to customers throughout the world for over 145 years.

1877

In 1877, Genzo Shimadzu Sr. became the first person in Japan to succeed in making a manned balloon.

1896

1896 Succeeded in taking X-ray pictures (first in Japan).

In 1896, the year after the German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen discovered X-rays, Professor Hanichi Muraoka of the Daisan High School (predecessor to Kyoto University) succeeded in producing a radiograph.

1904

In 1904, Shimadzu manufactured the first stationary chloride-type 150 ampere-hour storage battery in Japan.

1908

Later in 1908, Shimadzu began selling batteries under the name "GS Battery," based on the initials for Genzo Shimadzu.

1909

In 1909, Shimadzu completed the first medical X-ray system made in Japan.

1909 Created Japan's first medical X-ray device.

1911

1911 Large-size medical X-ray apparatus Japan's first large X-ray apparatus using AC power.

1912

The corporate emblem, “the Circle Crossed” originates with Genzo Shimadzu, the founder of Shimadzu Corporation, who decided to use it as our trademark in 1912.

1916

1916 Started manufacturing optical measurement instruments (cathetometers).

1917

Later, in 1917, the storage battery business was spun off as the Japan Storage Battery Co., Ltd., which is succeeded by GS Yuasa Corporation today.

Innovation and Collaboration Shimadzu began manufacturing testing equipment in 1917.

1918

1918 X-ray apparatus Diana Mechanical full-wave rectification system, with a capacity of 120kVp and 100mA. Dominated Japan's radiography industry at that time.

1919

1919* Sanjo Works, the main factory today.

1922

1922 Deep therapy apparatus Jupiter Mechanical rectification type provided with two main transformers and two rectifiers.

1934

1934 Developed spectrographs for the first time in Japan.

1936

1936 Started manufacture of aircraft equipment.

1937

1937 Diagnostic X-ray apparatus Katsura and Hokoku These units conformed to the laws relating to shockproof and X-ray proof specifications.

1947

1947 Started manufacture of electron microscopes for the first time in Japan.

1951

1951 Former Emperor Hirohito visited Sanjo Works, the main factory.

1952

The practical implementation of the first gas chromatograph for the separation of complex mixtures via partition chromatography is generally attributed to the British scientists A.J. Martin and A.T. James, and Martin was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1952 for this.

1956

1956 Developed gas chromatographs for the first time in Japan.

1961

1961 World's first remote-controlled X-ray TV system Control of all operations was possible from another room, and the radiologist was protected from the risk of exposure.

1968

1968 ? SHIMADZU (EUROPA) GmbH in F.R.Germany.
