In 1917 the school was purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The school received a charter on October 12, 1926, making it the first normal school in Pennsylvania to become a state teachers college.
On June 3, 1927, the State Council of Education authorized the school to change its name to the State Teachers College at Shippensburg.
On December 8, 1939, Shippensburg State Teachers College became the first teachers college in Pennsylvania and the fourth in the United States to be accredited by the Middle States Association of colleges and (Secondary) Schools.
In 1947 The Campus Reflector ceased publication as a newspaper and became more of a literary magazine.
In 1957 the word "campus" was dropped from the title and the publication became The Reflector, a literary magazine which is still being published today.
Beginning on January 7, 1959, the State Council of Education approved graduate work leading to the Master of Education degree.
Located in the historic Cumberland Valley, the Shippensburg University Graduate Program began in 1961.
The John L. Grove College of Business, established in 1971, is one of the premier business schools in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Irvis and his colleagues created the Pennsylvania Higher Education Equal Opportunity Act of 1971, ACT 101.
Since 1981, our college has been internationally accredited by the most prestigious business-accrediting agency, AACSB International.
In July 1983, it was again renamed to Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.
A major addition was completed in 1992, doubling the size of the building and providing space for the University Bookstore and Career Development Center.
