In 1989, Bert and John Jacobs designed their first tee shirt.
Beginning in 1990 the brothers traversed the east coast in their “burgundy soccer mom minivan,” dorm-storming colleges with duffle bags full of T-shirts.
Original Jake drawing, July 1994 By the Fall of 1994, heading home from a long, less-than-fruitful roadtrip, Bert and John were desperately searching for answers to keep the dream alive.
In 1998, the company brought out some products for cooler weather, such as long-sleeved T-shirts and sweatshirts.
Launch of the Pumpkin Festival in 2003
2003 An international unit is established.
One 2005 fundraiser brought in $100,000 while fostering competition in "backyard" events such as watermelon seed spitting.
2005 LIG buys licensee The Shirt Factory in New Hampshire; annual sales approach $60 million.
By early 2006, there were more than two dozen "Neighborhood Shoppes" devoted to stocking LIG products.
In their new book, Life is Good: How to Live with Purpose and Enjoy the Ride, (National Geographic, 2015) the Jacobs brothers describe a rollicking entrepreneurial journey that began as a fun way to scrape out a living and evolved into the expression of a simple philosophy based on optimism.
