Shoals High School company history timeline

1907

For most of the first year of operations (1907-08), classes were held in the Fork Shoals Mill Chapel.

1910

The first graduating class was that of 1910 with 5 graduates.

1916

The oldest section built in 1916 was torn down.

1920

To accommodate this growing enrollment a fifth grade teacher was employed for the 1920-21 school year, and the buildings of the old private high school were reopened to provide space for the upper grades.

1923

Work began on an addition to the school building (on the present site). Around Thanksgiving of 1923, the new building was completed, and the upper grades from across the river moved in.

1924

The City of Muscle Shoals was incorporated in 1924.

1938

In 1938, the school borrowed $7,500 in addition to federal funds that had been obtained, and three buildings were erected.

1951

Consolidation of county schools began in 1951.

1958

James F. Moore, Jr. was employed to serve as the first school superintendent beginning March 27, 1958.

Eight teachers were employed in July of 1958, and since the construction of a school had not yet been completed, the school system opened in Woodward Avenue Baptist Church.

The Muscle Shoals School system was founded in 1958.

Through the years, many superintendents, teachers, and other employees have contributed to the accomplishments achieved by the once small school system formed in 1958.

1959

In 1959, the former Howell Graves School building (which currently houses the system's administrative offices) was purchased from the Colbert County Board of Education.

Classes began in this building in the fall of 1959.

1960

Since the new school was overcrowded within the first year of operation, an additional 10 classrooms were added and occupied by February 1960.

1970

Alvin Parker was named as acting superintendent until March 1, 1970, at which time Donald R. Heidorn (former high school principal) was named as the second Muscle Shoals City Schools Superintendent.

1971

Moore on September 17, 1971, when the beautiful stadium he helped to create was dedicated as "The James F. Moore Stadium."

1977

Junior high students attended Avalon Middle School (the former high school). The Muscle Shoals Area Vocational School was added in 1977.

1998

Then, in August 1998, a new facility was built just behind the location of the old school.

1999

In 1999, a new state of the art high school was built.
