Shopper Events company history timeline

2010

In 2010, for the first time in online shopping history, United States online sales during Cyber Monday surpassed $1 billion.

2011

In 2011, Facebook rolled out sponsored stories as a form of early advertising.

2014

For instance, the launch of Apple Pay in 2014 made it easy for consumers to pay for products directly from their iPhones.

2015

Since the first Amazon Prime Day in 2015, the retailer has scaled its summer sale to record-breaking heights.

2017

Notably, Amazon bought the grocery store chain Whole Foods Market in 2017, leading to exclusive savings both in stores and online for Prime members.

2018

The growth of sales in physical stores in 2018 was merely 3.7%. Meanwhile, ecommerce sales saw a 15% jump.

Flash forward to 2018 and they are being outpaced and underpriced by online retailers to the point that they filed for bankruptcy.

2019

With ecommerce sales growing, the appeal of malls has gradually declined, hitting a 20-year low in sales in 2019.

2020

By May 2020, eCommerce sales had reached $82.5 billion, a 77% rise year-over-year.

Current projections show that by 2020, 90% of businesses will use social media for a portion of their customer service.

2021

In a December 2021 survey, UK families were asked to rate their financial situation following the pandemic.

Despite a smaller bump in sales, Prime Day 2021 was a success — it dominated a usually dormant online shopping period, driving traffic not only to its site, but also to other retailers that host competing sales.

2021, Amazon added a $10 service fee for deliveries from Whole Foods Market.

While people aren’t giving up on in-person shopping and experiences by a longshot, the retail market share for ecommerce is on the rise. It’s growing quickly enough that it is projected to reach 17.5% by 2021.
