Shore Medical Center company history timeline

1943

In June of 1943 George was drafted at 18 years old and inducted into the US Army.

1954

The first building added to the original structure was the Shriver Wing in 1954.

1958

In 1958, the White Wing was added, increasing the total beds to 155.

1961

After renting houses and starting a practice first in Ocean City, then Pierson Avenue in Somers Point, it was in 1961 that they purchased and settled into the big white house with a white picket fence at 644 Shore Road, just across the street from the hospital.

1970

Arnold Lane retired as hospital administrator in 1970.

1976

The West Wing, now known as the Howard S. Stainton Pavilion, was added in 1976, which added critical, intensive, post-intensive, and coronary care, as well as increasing the beds to 276.

1978

The hospital was the first in South Jersey with CT scan capabilities in 1978.

1982

In 1982, Point Pleasant Hospital changed its name to Northern Ocean Hospital System and construction began on Brick Hospital.

1984

Brick Hospital opened in 1984 with 120 beds.

1987

In 1987, the Northern Ocean Hospital System changed its name to Medical Center of Ocean County, comprised of Point Pleasant Hospital and Brick Hospital.

1995

To meet a long-standing need in the area for inpatient rehabilitation, the Medical Center of Ocean County, Jersey Shore Medical Center and JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute joined forces to create Shore Rehabilitation Institute at Point Pleasant Hospital in 1995.

2001

Point Pleasant Hospital closed in 2001.

2003

In 2003, the Medical Center of Ocean County became Ocean Medical Center as part of Meridian Health’s new brand initiative.

2004

Ocean Medical Center’s East Wing expansion project was completed in 2004.

Also in 2004, Ocean Care Center, Ocean Medical Center’s satellite emergency facility, relocated near the intersection of Routes 35 and 88 in Point Pleasant.

2006

That explains why the Cancer Center, which opened in 2006, has a white picket fence, walkways, an abundance of trees and shrubs, and an overall homelike feel.

2011

In 2011, Shore opened its Pediatric Care Center, the first of its kind in New Jersey, and its state-of-the-art Surgical Pavilion and Campus Expansion.
