Job Overview Shriners Children's Portland is seeking a full-time Pediatric Hand & Upper Extremity Surgeon to join our highly collaborative and mission-driven orthopedic team. This role focuses exclusively on pediatric hand and upper extremity care with a robust clinical and surgical practice, strong team support, academic opportunities, and the ability to shape program growth. This provider will care for a wide range of pediatric hand and upper extremity patients, including congenital conditions, trauma, brachial plexus, arthrogryposis, and CP-related upper extremity issues. This role offers a balanced weekly structure - two clinic days, two OR days, and one flex day with 1-in-10 rotating home call - and includes participation in established outreach clinics in Redmond, OR, and Vancouver, WA. The surgeon will join a highly collaborative pediatric orthopedic team supported by Advanced Practice Providers, MAs, cast techs, care managers, psychologists, rehabilitation specialists, hospitalists, and consistent resident and fellow involvement from OHSU and international training programs. Responsibilities * Perform clinical assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and treatment planning for pediatric patients with hand and upper extremity conditions. * Provide surgical and non-surgical management based on current standards of care, evidence-based practices, and patient-specific considerations. * Participate in inpatient and/or outpatient care, including preoperative and postoperative management, consultations, and discharge planning. * Perform operative procedures in accordance with institutional protocols and safety standards. * Collaborate with pediatricians, physiatrists, physical therapists, anesthesiologists, and other subspecialists in the coordinated care of patients. * Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic health record system in compliance with legal, regulatory, and institutional requirements. * Participate in shared call coverage, hospital rounds, and trauma response as assigned. * Contribute to departmental quality improvement, peer review, and clinical governance processes. * May participate in medical education, research, and scholarly activities depending on institutional affiliation or department expectations. * Maintain accountability for meeting established productivity benchmarks (e.g. wRVUS), quality metrics, and institutional performance standards * Ensure time is allocated in accordance with assigned clinical, surgical, administrative, and academic expectations. Qualifications Education * Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school * Completion of an ACGME accredited residency in Orthopedic Surgery * Completion of fellowship training in Hand/Upper Extremity Surgery. Additional fellowship training in Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery highly preferred. Experience * Minimum 1-3 years of post-fellowship or equivalent clinical experience in pediatric orthopedic hand/UE surgery preferred; recent fellowship graduates will be considered based on training and clinical exposure Certification and Licensures * Board certification or eligibility in Orthopedic Surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS), with subspecialty certification in Hand Surgery. Additional subspecialty certification in Pediatric Orthopedics highly preferred. * Must possess eligibility for active and unrestricted medical licensure in the state of practice * Must possess eligibility for active DEA * Must possess Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS for HCP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification * Credentialing and privileging by the medical staff in accordance with hospital bylaws Additional Knowledge and Skills * Comprehensive knowledge of pediatric hand and upper extremity conditions, including congenital differences, brachial plexus injuries, trauma, and post-traumatic deformities, with an understanding of growth and development considerations. * Proficiency in operative planning, surgical execution, and perioperative management for pediatric hand and upper extremity procedures, including tendon transfers, nerve repairs, and microsurgical techniques. * Familiarity with pediatric imaging, casting, splinting, bracing, and non-operative management strategies specific to upper extremity conditions. * Effective communication and counseling skills for engaging pediatric patients and their families regarding surgical options, expected outcomes, and rehabilitation plans. * Ability to function in a multidisciplinary environment, collaborating with therapists, nurses, and other specialists to manage complex upper extremity cases. * Competency in electronic medical record systems, documentation standards, and clinical decision support tools within the context of pediatric hand and upper extremity care.
