    Description:- Fabricates shipping containers and packaging to protect flight hardware, fracture critical hardware, fragile items, delicate instruments, hazardous materials, multi-million-dollar assemblies, electronics, and mechanical hardware from the environmental conditions encountered during transportation and long-term storage. Such containers shall meet the packaging requirements noted in the applicable contract, or in the case of hazardous materials, the applicable federal or international regulation. Interpret process plans and drawings provided by Packaging Engineering and coordinate fabrication and packing inspection points with Quality Assurance to ensure contractual and regulatory compliance. * Sets up and operates all woodworking and precision measuring instruments and equipment (i.e. table saw, miter saw, band saw, drill press, drill, nail and staple guns, etc.). Must have prior experience with such power tools. * Packages items using approved cardboard box material and foam inserts to achieve design specifications for product protection using either pre-made or unique box dimensions. * Interprets engineering blueprints, engineering drawings, sketches, technical specifications, reference manuals, instructions, process plans, and work orders to make layouts and determine methods of fabricating and repairing very complicated wood containers, tools, patterns, models, fixtures, mock-ups, and prototypes. Determines size and type of crate, dimensions, kinds and sizes of wood and other materials used in fabrication of non-standard and special shipping crates and boxes when such information is not specified. * Understands requirements for packaging and shipment of hazardous materials including explosives and radioactive materials to ensure compliance with DOT regulations. Performs marking, labeling, and bar coding in accordance with MIL-STD-129 and applicable hazardous material regulations. Prepares packaging data for submittal to traffic administrator * Coordinates with traffic administrator and packaging engineering to achieve project deadlines and requirements. Directs, trains, and instructs new and lower graded employees. * Fabricates domestic or export shipping containers for large irregularly shaped items, which require deviation from standard practice. Builds special crating fixtures for shipping large items such as flight hardware, spacecraft assemblies, heat shields by air or ground transportation. Directs, performs and determines methods for the operation of blocking, padding, tying down, and bracing loads on dedicated exclusive use flat beds, LTL, and daily pick-ups (i.e. UPS, FEDEX).
