Position Summary: As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will play a vital role as an assistant to our physicians. You will be cross trained to perform a range of administrative and clinical duties. These duties include preparing the patient to see the physician, preparing examination rooms, performing basic and routine vision screening examinations, administering eye medications, cleaning, and maintaining ophthalmic instruments and assisting physicians during minor surgical and laser procedures. Job Duties & Essential Functions: Patient Interaction & Clinical Intake Greet and communicate with patients and their families in a manner consistent with caring and respect. Initiate patient evaluations by accurately documenting the chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent information. Coordinate and obtain prior authorizations for medications in accordance with insurance requirements to ensure timely patient access to prescribed treatments. Pre-Exam & Diagnostic Testing Perform pre-exam testing, including visual acuity assessment (with pinhole and glare testing), confrontational visual fields, extraocular muscle testing, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, angle assessment, and dilation. Conduct advanced diagnostic testing such as OCT, fundus photography, IOL Master, Pentacam, A-scan, B-scan, Wave Scan/Vario, keratometry, lensometry, and visual field testing. Perform specialized testing as requested, including color vision screening, stereopsis, dry eye testing, optical biometry, and refractometry. Procedure & Treatment Support Assist with in-office minor surgical procedures and laser treatments. Complete prescription refill requests as authorized by the physician, ensuring proper documentation in the patient chart. Track, document, and communicate laboratory results to physicians and patients promptly, ensuring accuracy and continuity of care. Educate patients on the use of medications and provide pre- and post-operative instructions as directed by the physician. Assist with contact lens fittings and provide patient instruction on insertion, removal, and lens care. Equipment & Inventory Management Maintain and manage inventory of ophthalmic supplies, pharmaceuticals, and instruments. Inspect and assist with the maintenance of clinical examination equipment, report damage, coordinate repairs, and request replacements as necessary. Assist with cleaning surgical instruments in preparation for sterilization. Properly shut down and clean diagnostic testing equipment as needed. Check and record medical refrigerator temperatures daily; monitor supply dates and manage inventory accordingly. Clinic Readiness & Administrative Support Open and close exam rooms daily, including cleaning equipment, charging devices, and securing instruments. Assist with opening and closing the clinic as needed. Follow all safety protocols and clinic procedures. Monitor and respond to work emails; utilize shared tools such as Google Drive to stay informed throughout the workday. Maintain strict adherence to HIPAA regulations by safeguarding patient privacy and ensuring the confidentiality of all health information. Professional Development Participate in training and educational opportunities, including webinars and in-service sessions, to remain current with best practices. Perform additional duties as assigned or directed by the supervisor. Required Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent Minimum of one (1) year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification required or enrolled within one year and completion within two years of hire Strong customer service skills with a professional and friendly demeanor. THE OPPORTUNITY AT HAND The Certified Surgical Technician (“CST”) is responsible for helping our O.R. to run smoothly. You will ensure we are prepared with the right instruments and tools at the right time. You will have a working knowledge of all operating room equipment including emergency equipment used in CPR. You will maintain a working knowledge of surgical instruments, and are responsible for their care, maintenance, and cleaning (sterilization included). You will recognize equipment malfunction and be able to do minor troubleshooting. You'll become familiar with the surgical procedures and techniques of the Surgeons that you work with and will “gown and glove” them like a pro and assist with surgical procedures when needed. OUR EXPECTATIONS OF YOU Daily: set up and prepares the autoclaves for use, ensuring that the core sterilizer and tabletop units are functioning properly and achieving proper run specifications Inspect O.R. suite daily to ensure that it meets ASC standards for cleanliness Initial morning scrub shall be for 3 to 5 minutes; routine scrub is required between cases Gowning and gloving shall be in accordance with acceptable sterile technique Set up phaco and retina equipment and instruments while patient is being positioned and prepped Maintains the instrument table, mayo stands, and instruments in proper order and condition during the case Assist with stocking of supplies, cleaning of equipment, and room “turn over” in a timely fashion and notify appropriate parties of anything that needs to be addressed Check IOL with Circulating Registered Nurse for proper style, model, and power Assist the Circulating R.N. in “closing” the O.R. The O.R. should be left neat, clean, and ready for immediate use You may be asked to assist with direct patient care, from time to time Responsible for making and sterilizing packs, instrument trays, packaging and wrapping necessary instruments and items necessary for certain procedures, to ensure their sterility Responsible for end-of-week cleaning and maintenance of all inventory expiration dates Conduct lens inventory and report results to the Clinical Director or purchasing agent. Assures a complete consignment prior to the next day's surgery WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO SUCCEED Must have graduated from an accredited program for surgical techniques or supply evidence of equivalent practical experience Must have knowledge of sterilization techniques and their appropriate uses 1+ year working in an operating room environment, preferably as a surgical technician preferred Certification or training in ophthalmology surgical techniques preferred WHO WE ARE Our globally recognized healthcare team is comprised of some of the top minds in ocular medicine.
