Responsibilities
The Spanish Sign Language Interpreter will provide interpretation within the State of Oregon. Interpretation will consist of but not limited to Education, legal, Medical, Environmental, and Social Services, etc. This position performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of Cayuse.
Job Responsibilities
Accurately interpreting spoken work situations like lectures, conversations, and meetings
Interpreting English into Spanish Sign Language
Working with an organization's faculty to better facilitate communication with deaf members of the community.
Collaborating with other ASL Interpreters
Utilizing technology to transcribe spoken English in some settings.

Qualifications
Minimum Job Skills and Qualifications:
High School Degree or BA Degree or equivalent in years of experience
5+ years of experience with sign languages in Spanish from different parts of Latin America and Spain.
Registry of Interpretation for Deaf (RID), Board of evaluation of Interpretation certification program (BEI), World Association of Sign Language Interpreters.
Demonstrated experience in providing auxiliary aids and services to facilitate effective communication for people with disabilities, including people who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf-Blind.
Experience in Language Liaison, Education, Medical, Environmental, or Military Interpretation
Must be comfortable interpreting for these organizations: National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI), Department of Social services (DSHS), Certified Health Interpretation (CHI), Federal courts, Legal, economic and World Bank.
Assigned interpreters are certified or qualified by any of the following bodies: Oregon Court Certification program; Oregon Health Authority; Oregon Health Care Interpreter Program.
Assigned interpreters have experience interpreting for Metro or other jurisdictions in Oregon.
Experience in specialized vocabularies (i.e., legal, performing arts, cultural, or other specialized vocabulary used in land use and transportation planning).
Must be able to pass a background check. May require additional background checks as required by projects and/or clients at any time during employment.

SUMMARY:

Title: Sign Language Interpreter
Position Purpose
This position serves as a member of the educational team along with Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) and is available to address communication accessibility and deaf cultural issues as they arise. The position also provides re-teaching and other academic and classroom support.
Key Responsibilities
Provide accurate interpretation appropriate to the student's age, register, personality, affect, learning style and language competencies.
For students in all academic situations including classrooms, library, assemblies, and field trips.
For students in school locations such as health center, counseling center, and administration.
For students during extracurricular activities such as sports, drama, music, clubs and school-wide programs.
Provide tactile interpretation or alternatives to American Sign Language (ASL) or Contact Varieties as appropriate to the needs of students who are Deaf/Blind, cognitively impaired, or having multiple disabilities or severe language delays.
Prepare for student interpretation needs.
Consult with classroom teacher regarding, curriculum content, general goals, new vocabulary or materials presented.
Gather information necessary to effectively interpret special school activities and extra-curricular events such as theater arts, music, storytelling, poetry, field trips and assemblies.
Consider accessibility of instructional plans and educational environment to support effective interpreting while teaming with classroom teacher.
Maintain a broad knowledge base that covers academic areas from kindergarten through Advanced Placement.

Roles, responsibilities, and boundaries of educational interpreters
Technical needs of interpreting, i.e., lighting, visual aids, positioning, and the challenges related to interpreting between languages.

Teach sign language to assigned students

Collect and summarize data as required by DHH teacher and IEP teams.

Associate's Degree from an Interpreter Education Program; Bachelor's Degree preferred.

About Lane Regional Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program
Lane Regional Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program serves students who are deaf and hard of hearing. Lane Regional Program teachers work with students, parents, school staff and other community agencies to help provide accessible education for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in Lane County. Both direct instruction focusing the unique communication needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their development of language and Technical assistance and consultation are provided.
The Lane Regional Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program is part of the Special Education Service Area, which also provides School Psychologist services, Speech Language Therapy and Augmentative Communication services, behavior consultation, and direct services for students with moderate and severe disabilities, students with emotional/behavioral disorders, and adjudicated at-risk youth. Lane Regional Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program is funded by the Department of Education and is part of Oregon's service delivery for students with low-incidence disabilities (Vision Impairments, Hearing Impairments, Deaf/Blindness, Severe Orthopedic Impairments, Autism, and Traumatic Brain Injury.

Job Summary: The Healthcare Interpreter (QHI) plays a critical role in ensuring clear and accurate communication between healthcare providers and patients who have limited English proficiency (LEP) or speak other languages. This role is essential for facilitating understanding in medical settings, where precise communication is vital for patient safety, informed consent, and effective treatment. The CHI works collaboratively with the health care team providing interpretation services for in-person, telephone, and virtual visits as well as supporting the translation needs of the clinic to provide written information in the patients preferred language. This is an onsite position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
* Work collaboratively with all department care teams, attending huddles and team meetings, connecting with team members to plan and provide language services for patients with LEP seeking clinical services.
* Provide real-time, accurate interpretation between healthcare providers/team members and patients in a variety of clinical settings, ensuring that all parties fully understand the information being communicated.
* Translate educational materials such as patient brochures, informational pamphlets, and instructional guides in interpreter's language. Ensure that clinical terminology is accurately interpreted and that complex clinical concepts are presented in a way that is accessible and easy to understand.
* Convert patient-facing communications within Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems, such as appointment reminders, test results, and treatment plans, into the patient's preferred language as spoken by the interpreter. Ensure that the translated text maintains the accuracy and confidentiality of medical information while being comprehensible to the patient.
* Adapt translations to be culturally relevant, avoiding any potential misunderstandings or offensive language. This may involve localizing idioms, metaphors, or examples to align with the cultural norms of the target population.
* Communicate with the care team, documenting all contacts with patients in the EHR in a timely manner and communicating in person or by phone as needed.
* Work proactively to determine when and where translation services will be necessary and coordinate efforts to be available to staff.
* Coordinate with contracted interpreter service providers to schedule on-site, telephonic, or video remote interpretation sessions based on the needs of the scheduled patients daily.
* Provide guidance to clinical staff on the effective use of interpretation services, including how to work with interpreters during patient interactions. Act as a resource for staff to address any questions or challenges related to language services and elevate any concerns to site leadership and/or Registration and Interpretation Services Program Manager.
* Work with Registration and Interpretation Services Program Manager and the Process Improvement Specialist to review Meaningful Language Access metrics and help optimize language access to care.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
* Handle protected health information in a manner consistent with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
HIPAA Requirements:
The CHI has access to PHI to create and maintain an accurate and up-to-date health record. Applying the minimum necessary standard of HIPAA, the designated record sets to which this employee will have access include all sections of the dental and medical record, patient demographic information in the practice management system, incoming records, reports, results, consultations, etc. The [position title] should read the content of these records only to the extent needed to accomplish the assigned task (e.g. filing or disclosure).
