Position Summary
We are seeking qualified and experienced American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters to provide in-person interpretation services for clients in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Interpreters will support communication between Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing individuals and hearing persons in a variety of settings, including but not limited to medical facilities, government agencies, educational institutions, and legal environments.
Key Responsibilities
Provide accurate and culturally appropriate ASL interpretation services in real-time.
Interpret in one-on-one, group, or public settings, maintaining confidentiality and neutrality.

Minimum Qualifications

Proficiency in both American Sign Language and spoken/written English.

INTRODUCTION
This position is located in the Department on Disability Services, Office of Human Capital Administration.
Performs simultaneous interpretation from the spoken word to signed language, predominately in American Sign Language (ASL), for deaf individuals and from the signed language to the spoken word for hearing persons. Interprets with equal facility in both languages, from spoken word or signed language. May translate as well as interpret if proficient in a language other than English.
MAJOR DUTIES

* Provide services such as Interpreting, Note-Taking, and Reading at loud services.
* May serve as a source in the area of deaf culture and assist management in the identification of barriers and to resolve difficult cultural, linguistic, and communicative problems between deaf/hard of hearing persons and hearing persons in the workplace.
* May assist in conducting ongoing in-house Sign Language (ASL) instruction for employees. Implements instruction and evaluates the instruction's effectiveness.

Qualifications
Applicant must have one (1) year of Specialized Experience at the next lower grade level. Three (3) years of related work experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Education/Certification
A bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
National Interpreter Certification (NIC) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or equivalent (i.e. NAD, CI/CT, CSC) is desired.
WORK EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
Knowledge of English and Sign Language to decide regarding the most effective means of communicating with each deaf and hard of hearing individual and to interpret material expressively and receptively in a variety of settings including individual, small group, and platform environments.
Working knowledge of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation including the ability to keep pace with normal conversation, to interpret nuances, voice inflections, idiosyncrasies, and mannerisms of participants in order to accurately convey the message.
General knowledge of the products and services that support the communications needs of deaf people.
Ability to interpret voice to sign, sign to voice, oral transliteration, and deaf interpretation. Ability to work with minimal language skilled clients who may also and/or have developmental issues.

Tasks & Responsibilities:
Provide accurate (verbatim) interpretation of spoken words between incarcerated individuals, their visitors, various federal law enforcement, court officials, etc.
On-demand and prescheduled over-the-phone (OPI), video remote (VRI) and onsite (OSI) in-person appointments (consecutive, simultaneous).
Sight translation of written forms and other documents (as needed).
Monitor third-party interpreters for accuracy and quality assurance.
Comply with professional ethics and quality standards.
Ensure the interpretation of spoken words is conveyed in a cultural style and register appropriate for the subject matter. This requires accurate conveyance of slang expressions, linguistic nuances, and idioms.
Communicate in a timely and professional manner with Prisma team members.
Participate in quality management processes, e.g. Corrective Action Reports (CAR), Root Cause Analyses (RCA), solution implementation.
Take all measures necessary to protect and keep private any sensitive information shared with you to carry out interpretation projects (e.g. PHI, PII, SBU).
If onboarded, you will adhere to the policies and processes defined in the Master Service Agreement (MSA), Addendums, and Prisma Vendor Guide.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements - ALL are required
At least 18 years of age.
You must be a U.S. citizen.
You must reside in the United States or a U.S. territory.
You must agree to undergo a federal government background check at Public Trust level, which includes a screening process and fingerprinting.
ILR level 3 (or higher) proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension in English and a non-English language as measured by the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR), the US federal government's language-related oversight agency.
Test score documentation must be from an authorized ILR testing entity such as: LTI, NCLA, DLS, ACTFL, etc.
3+ years of professional interpretation experience.
At minimum, a high school diploma.
Native or near-native level proficiency in English and the other language
Abide by the ATA code of ethics.
Computer or laptop with a wired headset plus a mobile phone as a back-up device, and secure (non-public) high-speed internet connection.
Quiet, private workspace.
