Duties
* Provides simultaneous and consecutive interpreting services between English and French in formal and informal settings in support of foreign affairs programs and diplomatic activities.
* Provides interpreting services in diplomatic settings, serving as an interpreter for the President, the Vice President, the Secretary of State and other U.S. Government officials.
* Serves as a member of the Emergency Relocation Group (ERG) provides essential interpreting support during national emergencies.
* Handles complex logistics to perform liaison and coordinating work with officers of the government and private organizations for various engagements such as conferences and negotiation sessions.
* Interviews, tests, and may train interpreter-candidates and may be required to develop guidelines for the training of interpreters at lower levels of expertise.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all the qualification requirements described below by the closing date of this announcement.
Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in the Federal service which provided you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience in translating, interpreting, or other work requiring the use of English and the other language; or a combination of work (that required English and the other language) and training at the Defense Language Institute, Foreign Service Institute, or comparable training.
IN ADDITION, this position requires the following additional specialized experience:
* Experience with simultaneous and consecutive interpreting at the conference level French into English and English into French.
* Experience with the contemporary politics, economy, international relations, and the other country or countries in which French is spoken.
* Experience interpreting in meetings at the conference level on behalf of senior members of governments, including one-on-ones, bilateral meetings, and press events.
THE FOLLOWING SELECTIVE FACTOR IS REQUIRED:
Must have experience in interpretation of French into English and English into French.

The individual will act as the interpreting services dispatcher for the department. They will be responsible for fielding incoming calls/requests and dispatching various interpreters as needed. Part-Time, Non-Exempt Background: The Education and Guest Services (EG&S) Division provides meaningful learning opportunities for Mount Vernon's one million annual onsite visitors and students in classrooms around the country. Through a diverse portfolio of interpretive experiences, engaging programs, and online resources, we expand each learner's understanding of and appreciation for George Washington and the revolutionary world in which he lived.
The Department of Education Administration (EdAdmin), one of Education and Guest Services' operating units, manages special projects and cross-division programming. In 2025, the EdAdmin group will launch the Revolutionary War Encampment, a new experience that will be a core part of Mount Vernon's America250 programming.
Compensation:
$15.00/hour
Expected Hours:
21-24 Hours/week with 2 weekdays and every other weekend.
Position-Specific Responsibilities:
* Create a positive learning environment for guests of all ages and backgrounds by being hospitable, approachable, and professional in appearance and demeanor.
* Provide guests with accurate, interesting, and pertinent historical information about everyday life in Revolutionary War encampments and 18th-century military history in an engaging, timely, and articulate manner.
* Follow departmental interpretive strategies in order to effectively integrate your interpretation into the larger learning experience of guests.
* Assist the Encampment Interpretive Supervisors with daily opening, closing, and security of the Encampment.
* Assist the Encampment Interpretive Supervisors with implementing emergency procedures when necessary to ensure the safety of guests, colleagues, historic structures, and collections.
* Assist with special tours, programs, and other projects as needed.
Qualifications and Requirements:
* Bachelor's degree preferred, but not required.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required.
* Must be able to work with a diverse audience and have a sincere interest in military history.
* Must be punctual, flexible, responsible, and able to work well under pressure.
* Ability to work creatively and effectively as a member of a team is essential.
Special Requirements:
* The successful candidate must be able to:
* Stand/move on steep and uneven surfaces outside for long periods and in various conditions. Work responsibilities include some areas that are non-ADA accessible.
* Comply with department dress code (period dress and office attire) and division-wide managerial standards
* Lift and move up to 50lbs
* Adhere to department training standards and operational procedures
* Be available to work frequent weekends, evenings, and holidays

Fluency in spoken and written English and the language of interpreting, with a preference for native-level fluency in the language of interpreting. Professional-level medical interpreting and short non-publication translation skills are required.

Introduction:
George Washington's Mount Vernon is seeking part-time guides to provide tours through the Historic Mansion, staff the Washington Family Tomb, and lead specialty tours as a History Interpreter. History Interpreters work individually and within a team to educate Mount Vernon's 1.1 million annual guests on how George Washington shaped the world in an age of revolutionary change.
History interpreters provide the historical framework that educates guests on George Washington and the world he transformed. These tours promote reflection about our past and its connection to today by using engaging and positive guest experiences that also aim to encourage our visitors to take positive action within their own communities. Our interpretations take the contradictions and the promise of Washington's revolutionary world head on by confronting slavery and both his successes and failures within the context of trying to build a ‘more perfect union.'
Compensation: $15.00/hour Expected Hours:

Assist with special tours, programs, and other projects as needed
Minimum Qualifications:

Must be responsible, flexible, punctual, and able to work well under pressure
Ability to work creatively and effectively as a member of a team is mandatory
Special Requirements:
