This position provides year-round interpretive and administrative services for the Wisconsin School for the Deaf (WSD), the Outreach Program, and Wisconsin Deafblind Technical Assistance Program (WDBTAP) staff, students, and families, as assigned by the Wisconsin Educational Services Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (WESP-DHH) Center Director. Responsibilities include voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice communication with hearing individuals in professional and community settings, including hearing parents of deaf students, the Parent Staff Association, the Wisconsin Association of the Deaf, various advisory councils and committees, school districts, parent-teacher organizations, and civic groups. The position also supports the development, implementation and management of interpreter services to the staff and students at WESP-DHH.

Salary Information
This position is in the classification of Sign Language Interpreter. Depending on qualifications, the salary will be between $32.00- $38.00 per hour (approximately $53,248 - $63,232 per year, adjusted for the 0.80 FTE). For current and eligible former State employees, compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan effective at time of hire.
This position is eligible for a $0.80 per hour night differential for hours worked between 6:00pm and 6:00am, and a $0.80 per hour weekend differential for hours worked on Saturdays and Sundays. Hours that fall during both periods are eligible for both differentials.
Employees in this position may also be eligible for a $1.00 per hour add-on for fluency in American Sign Language (ASL), contingent upon achieving an ASL Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) rating of 2+ or higher. This position is in pay schedule 07, range 03. A one-year probationary period will be required.
This position offers excellent benefits. The State of Wisconsin is a qualifying employer for the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
Job Details
Special notes: This is a 0.80 FTE (approximately 32 hours per week), year-round position. Typical work schedule is Monday-Thursday, 11:00 am - 8:00 pm, with flexibility in start and end times based on operational needs to ensure an eight-hour workday, including a 30-minute unpaid lunch.
Candidates must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a Sign Language Interpreter - Advanced with the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. Eligibility means the candidate is currently licensed in another state and qualifies for a Wisconsin Sign Language Interpreter - Advanced license based on recognized credentials, such as RID NIC or BEI Advanced/Master.

A valid state driver's license is required, as this position involves some independent in-state travel for assignments as needed.
Remote Work: This position is not eligible for remote work and requires the employee to be onsite at their headquarters on the Wisconsin Educational Services Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing campus in Delavan, WI, during all regular working hours, except when traveling independently within the state for assignments.
Travel: This position may require independent in-state travel for interpreting assignments and other work-related duties as assigned.
Headquarters: The position is headquartered at the Wisconsin Educational Services Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing campus located at 309 West Walworth Avenue in Delavan, WI. Reimbursement for traveling to or from the employee's headquarters is not provided (e.g., mileage, meals, parking, lodging, etc.).
Pre-hire requirements: A criminal background check will be conducted prior to an offer of hire. A TB screen will be required prior to start.
Legal authorization: Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., without DPI sponsorship). The Department of Public Instruction does not sponsor visas, either at time of hire or at any later time.

Render correct concepts and meanings according to the conventions of established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation and polite expressions.

Remain calm during the interpreting sessions in the event that one of the primary speakers is incoherent or upset, especially in emergency situations such as 911 calls.

Follow client instructions, in compliance with protocol to ensure client expectations are met with the Limited English-speaking Person (LEP), avoiding interaction with the LEP without client's permission.
Understand protocol and terminology for various industries including, but not limited to, Medical, Insurance, Finance and Law.

**Some calls may be highly emotional and/or stressful in nature. The interpreter may need to remain on a call for extended periods without breaks due to the nature of the call or may, at times experience high call volumes. Qualifications
Fluency in Rohingya and English and skilled in the associated cultural dynamics.
Ability to provide cultural competency and assess regional and accent differences to find ways of communicating with the LEP.
Excellent listening, retention and note-taking skills to maintain a high level of accuracy during interpretation.
Ability to concentrate, stay detached from the conversation, remain neutral and objective at all times, and remain on calls that involve sensitive subjects such as end of life conversations, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and matters concerning sexual orientation and/or gender expression.
Education or work experience in language-related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation or interpretation preferred.
Must be able to adapt to any LLS technology enhancements that improve service delivery and meet client demands.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Legally authorized to work in the United States.

Position Overview:
The Karen Video-Telephone Interpreter is responsible for handling calls on demand, and renders the meaning of conversations between Karen and English speakers. The interpreter breaks the communication barrier in a wide range of industries that LanguageLine Solutions serves: Healthcare, Government, Insurance, Financial, Utilities, Travel & Hospitality, General Business, Law Enforcement, Court, and 911.
The interpreter processes information quickly, concisely and recognizes sensitive cultural differences. The interpreter is professional and courteous at all times and uses appropriate terminology and understands common industry procedures and practices. The video and audio interpreting sessions may involve simple or complex, technical or non-technical subjects.
This position does not involve written translation however translators and other skilled linguists are encouraged to apply. The interpreters translate verbally.

Essential Job Functions:
Respond to video and audio interpreting sessions promptly and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
Participate in online, video and audio training sessions.
Deliver interpretation services via video and expediently type data on a dedicated device, such as a laptop, desktop computer, mobile phone, or tablet, in order to perform the essential functions of the job.
Render correct concepts and meanings according to the conventions of established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation and polite expressions.
Maintain a professional demeanor throughout the video and audio interpreting sessions at all times.
Remain calm during video and audio interpreting sessions in the event that one of the primary speakers is incoherent or upset, especially in emergency situations such as 911 calls.
Maintain punctuality and availability during scheduled work hours.
Follow client instructions, in compliance with protocol to ensure client expectations are met with the Limited English-speaking Person (LEP), avoiding interaction with the LEP without client's permission.
Understand protocol and terminology for various industries including, but not limited to, Medical, Insurance, Finance and Law.
Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and working in a diverse environment.
**Some calls may be highly emotional and/or stressful in nature. The interpreter may need to remain on a call for extended periods without breaks due to the nature of the call or may, at times experience high call volumes. The interpreter must have the ability to provide the required, company standards of service within this dynamic environment. **
Qualifications
Fluency in Karen and English and skilled in the associated cultural dynamics.
Ability to provide cultural competency and assess regional and accent differences to find ways of communicating with the LEP.
Excellent listening, retention and note-taking skills to maintain a high level of accuracy during interpretation.
Ability to concentrate, stay detached from the conversation, remain neutral and objective at all times, and remain on calls that involve sensitive subjects such as end of life conversations, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and matters concerning sexual orientation and/or gender expression.
Education or work experience in language-related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation or interpretation preferred.
Must be able to adapt to any LLS technology enhancements that improve service delivery and meet client demands.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Legally authorized to work in the United States.

Interpret from American Sign Language (ASL) to English and English to ASL for deaf and hard-of-hearing students as assigned. Adhere to professional Code of Professional Conduct as outlined by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). Must be able to successfully interact with a diverse population.
Minimum Requirements
Associate's degree or a combination of relevant experience, education and training that equates to the required degree.
Two years of experience performing American Sign Language interpretation as a certified interpreter or an equivalent combination of experience and education in certified interpreting.
Demonstrated ability to provide expressive and receptive communication modalities used by the student who is deaf or hard of hearing such as ASL, Signed English, and/or tactile interpreting.
Demonstrated ability to provide expressive transliterating/interpreting at a rate commensurate with conversational speech and class lectures.
Demonstrated ability to provide sign-to-voice interpreting while maintaining the integrity of the message and competence of English grammar, including syntax, spelling, and punctuation.
For VRI, interpreter must have high speed internet access and a clean contrasting solid background

Preferred Requirements
