Contract Responsibilities:
Provides consecutive in person and virtually both by phone and video remote first-person interpretation.
Follows interpreter protocols and procedures as required by Propio L.S. clients.
Follows all Propio L.S. policies and procedures related to information confidentiality and interpreter ethics.
Maintains strict patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, GLBA and/or regulatory requirements or policies and standards.
Establishes and maintains quality service and positive interaction with all patients, customers, visitors, health care providers, and clinical employees.
Continuously improves vocabulary and specialized subject matter knowledge, as required for various clients, such as medical, legal, social services, etc.
Requirements:

REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High school diploma or GED required.
Experience: 100 percent bilingual English and Spanish. Good general knowledge of the production areas and management personnel. Skilled in accurate interpretation. Must be able to communicate translate effectively in verbal and written format in English to/from Spanish and translate written documents. Confidentiality is a must.
Computer Skills: Basic PC skills preferred. Primarily Microsoft Windows XP Professional programs such as Excel, Word, and Microsoft Office programs.
Communication Skills: Must be capable of communicating well both verbally and in writing with all levels of team members from hourly to upper management as well as government officials.
Special Skills: Ability to drive a company vehicle. Must carry a valid driver s license. Class D Chauffeurs License is preferred. Excellent people skills and a willingness to assist as needed. Ability to work under little supervision.

SUMMARY CLASS TITLE: EDUCATIONAL INTERPRETER I (Lead Interpreter)
BASIC FUNCTION:
Apply ASL interpreting, English transliterating and/or other communication modalities in the educational environment to ensure access to information and maximum learning between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and faculty, staff, and other students.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The levels of Interpreter are distinguished by both the level of comfort, skill, and knowledge in service delivery and encouraging effective communication and interaction in the educational setting. The Interpreter III serves in a supportive capacity in the classroom. The Interpreter II clearly interprets all communication. The Interpreter I functions in strong coordination and leadership with teachers and school staff to ensure achieved intent of instruction.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Attend and interpret the educational environment including but not limited to:
Classrooms
Laboratories
Field trips
Assemblies
Sports practices / competitions
School-sponsored extra-curricular activities
Meetings / conferences
Graduation ceremonies
All other educational opportunities provided to students.
Encourage communication and interactions between deaf/ hard of hearing students and faculty, staff, administrators, students, and others.
Meet with teachers and staff to coordinate efforts in achieving instructional goals of the educational team.
Make recommendations to instructional staff based on the learning styles of students being served.
Work closely with director of special education or appropriate staff to coordinate interpreting services based on the needs of students in the district.
Prepare for demanding course material as necessary for successful interpreting and/or transliterating.
Participates and makes recommendations as a professional member of the educational team in the Admission and Release Committee (ARC) process;
and
Perform other duties as assigned that do not interfere with the communication accessibility of assigned student(s).

American Sign Language, Signed English, Signed Exact English and other recognized modes of communication within the deaf and hard of hearing community.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

ABILITY TO:
Interpret from spoken English to the IEP specified modality (ASL, Signed English, etc.) and from the IEP specified modality to spoken English.
Fully and effectively implement knowledge of the field of interpreting.
Mentor other educational interpreters.
Relate well to deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with administrators, teachers and directors of special education.
Provide instructional staff with relevant information regarding student's functional abilities in the classroom.
Provide PD on deafness and interpreting related topics.
Communicate effectively orally, in writing and across the signing continuum.
Work independently with little direction;
and
Maintain current knowledge of school rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's Degree preferably from an Interpreter Training Program (ITP);
and
Minimum of 3 years of experience interpreting.
OR
7 years interpreting experience may be accepted.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Full license from the Kentucky Board of Interpreters (KBI).

Willingness to serve as a mentor for interpreters without full licensure
REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent, Executive Director, or designee

HIPAA Training for Business Associates certificate (completed within the last year)
Proof of language proficiency via a medically based language assessment (LangStat, Reach Diversity, Language Testing Int'l)
Accredited Medical Interpreting Training course (i.e.: ALTA, MITS, Bridging the Gap, MiTio, Cross-Cultural training, 40-hour accredited medical courses).
Preferred Qualifications
Degree or certifications in interpreting practices.
National Medical Interpreter Certification by CCHI or NBCMI.
2 years of medical interpreting experience, within a hospital or clinical setting.

SUMMARY:
Ability to interpret accurately for any management or personnel staff. Must be able to interpret for any team members who are non- English speaking. Ability to interpret documents accurately from English to/from Spanish. Must be able to assist the dispensary staff with physicals and doctor appointments including interpretation for any non-English-speaking team members at the doctor's office. Any other tasks or miscellaneous duties deemed appropriate by the supervisor.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High school diploma or GED required.
Experience: 100 percent bilingual English and Spanish. Good general knowledge of the production areas and management personnel. Skilled in accurate interpretation. Must be able to communicate translate effectively in verbal and written format in English to/from Spanish and translate written documents. Confidentiality is a must.
Computer Skills: Basic PC skills preferred. Primarily Microsoft Windows XP Professional programs such as Excel, Word, and Microsoft Office programs.
Communication Skills: Must be capable of communicating well both verbally and in writing with all levels of team members from hourly to upper management as well as government officials.
Special Skills: Ability to drive a company vehicle. Must carry a valid driver s license. Class D Chauffeurs License is preferred. Excellent people skills and a willingness to assist as needed. Ability to work under little supervision.
Other Requirements: Good attendance, safety, and all-around work record.
