Position Overview
The position of American Sign Language Interpreter has the purpose of providing communication access in the classroom and on the campus of the University of North Texas. Access will be provided in either American Sign Language or Spoken English to meet the need of the consumer. This interpreter will be certified through either the BEI of Texas or the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID/NIC),and will maintain professional certification. This interpreter will also practice and enforce the Code of Professional Conduct as outlined by RID/BEI. Minimum Qualifications

This is an entry-level position responsible for facilitating mission-driven programming on and off the Dallas Zoo campus. We have two openings for this position. Interpreters will actively engage audiences through education programming, including interpretation and camps. Interpreters must be comfortable interpreting any topic relevant to the zoo and wildlife conservation to a wide variety of audiences. Bilingual in English/Spanish is a plus! This is a variable hour position with a maximum of 29 hours per week, and must be available for evenings, weekends, and holidays. We have two (2) openings for this role. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Deliver engaging, mission-driven experiences to inspire conservation action on behalf of wildlife:
* Reinforce and encourage interest in wildlife, in age-appropriate, developmentally appropriate, positive engagement with zoo guests and program participants via programming focused on wildlife conservation and nature connections.

JOB SUMMARY
Works under general supervision of Supervisor or Assistant Director Language Services Department. This job is responsible for the accurate interpretation/translation of healthcare information to/from Spanish-speaking patients, patient families to members of the care team. Maintains record of interpreting sessions/encounters as well as supports written translations as needed.
* The applicant must be willing to obtain the (MINC) MEDICAL INTERPRETER NATL CERT. If not completed at the time of hire, the expectation is to achieve the Medical Interpretation National Certification within the first 18 months of employment.
* This is a PRN position.

JOB DUTIES
* Must be able to accurately interpret medical and health care information/instructions from physicians, nurses, or other health care staff to patients/families; and accurately interpret questions and/or concerns from patients/families to physicians, nurses, or health care staff.

* Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, with patients, families, and hospital staff.
* Translate consent forms, discharge orders, teaching protocols, and similar from English to target language (s).
* Assist in obtaining patients/families signature where appropriate.
* Provide information regarding health care related cultural issues/needs of limited English proficient patients/families to hospital staff to develop sensitivity.

* Assist with varying departmental activities and projects as requested.
* Document in EPIC all daily patient sessions, including University hospitals, hospital based and ambulatory clinics in an accurate and timely manner.
* Keep an accurate list of interpretation sessions and enter this information by the end of each using the RedCap application in Epic per Language Services Department standards of practice.
* Ability to meet physical and non-physical demands as outlined in the job description is an essential function of the job. Proactively search for ways to improve service.
* Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
* Assumes the Team Lead role as needed to support Language Services departmental operations.
