    Special Education Services/American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter Reports To: Building Administrator FSLA Status: Non-Exempt Compensation: 913 (Salary determined by experience) Work Days: 181 FTE: 7 hours per day American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter Position Summary: The ASL Interpreter facilitates linguistic access to opportunities for students in their physical, social, emotional, academic, and cognitive growth. The ASL Interpreter supports an educational environment to improve and develop the students. This individual is responsible for interpreting between English and American Sign Language for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HoH) students said in a variety of situations. Essential Duties: Interprets between Deaf/HoH students, classmates, district employees, and others in the educational setting, in accordance with the students' Individualized Education Plan. Maintains confidentiality of information about students in accordance with interpreter standards of professional conduct. Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher. Determines and manages appropriate considerations for quality interpreting, including lighting and positioning within the classroom and other environments Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for introducing and reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, and abilities. Acts as a member of the educational team by providing the IEP team with information regarding student use of interpreter in mainstream setting Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes. Provides limited tutoring for mainstream classroom material for D/HH students under the direct supervision of a special education teacher if deemed necessary Must be willing to have flexible schedule and commute between schools if required. Participates with other staff members in activities and duties as designated by the principal, teacher or other certified/licensed person in charge of the program. Performs other duties as assigned. To ensure continuity of services, alternative work site may be necessary in the event of a health crisis or disruptive situation that requires the closing of school and/or office buildings. An employee's eligibility for alternative work site will be determined by the superintendent of schools. Expectations and guidelines for alternative work site will be distributed by the employee's supervisor, based on his/her role and responsibilities. Job Specifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required): Must meet the qualifications as established by the Oklahoma Educational Interpreter for the Deaf Act, including: Must have completed one of the following: An interpreter training program Obtained a Bachelor's degree, or Worked three or more years in an area related to the field of deaf education, which could include interpreting in non-educational settings, such as church, etc. Must maintain one of the following: Quality Assurance Screening Test (QAST) Level III or better, or Educational Interpreters Proficiency Assessment (EIPA) Level 3.5 or better National certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Must be able to prove registration with the State Department of Education Must maintain 10 hours of interpreter Continuing Education Units per year, 50% being in Education. Ability to interpret and transliterate (expressive and voice) Must have the ability to see, hear and understand the message and deliver in the appropriate mode.
