Job Description:
Metro State University, Minnesota's public, urban university, and four-time recipient of the Insight Into Diversity Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award is seeking to hire a ASL Interpreter Specialist. This is a full-time probationary position within the Center for Accessibility Resources.
The Center for Accessibility Resources supports eligible students with disabilities by providing reasonable and appropriate accommodations as required by Federal, State laws and Minnesota State Board Policy 1B, 4 in support of the Metropolitan State University mission of equal opportunity for all individuals to participate in university programs, services and activities. This position ensures equal access to university life by providing effective signlanguageinterpreting for students and visitors who are deaf and hard of hearing. This position will support the Center for Accessibility Resources staff in providing accommodations and services to students with disabilities and assisting faculty with classroom accessibility.

Minimum Qualifications:
The following qualifications are required of all applicants seeking consideration for this position. Only applicants whose resumes clearly demonstrate fulfillment of each of these minimum qualifications will be considered for the position:
* Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing using English.
* National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID): Certificate of Interpretation and Certificate of Transliteration OR (RID) Comprehensive Skills Certificate OR National Association of the Deaf Proficiency Certificate Level III or higher (IV or V).
* Two years' experience as a signlanguageinterpreter.
* Skills in forecasting, synthesizing and extracting meaning in another's language, spoken or signed, and to produce an equivalent message into an intelligible form for all clientele.
* Skills in simultaneous mental and physical processing of auditory and visual information and formulation of an accurate interpretation of another's intent, spirit and sophistication of language.
Preferred Qualification:
* Current working knowledge and understanding of computer hardware and software used as assistive technology (e.g. MS Office applications, Read & Write Gold, Adobe Pro, JAWS, etc.).
* AAS degree from recognized interpreting program and four years' experience as a signlanguageinterpreter.
* Demonstrated ability to be well organized in a multi-faceted, multi-task environment.
* Basic understanding of issues and policies related to accessibility, including Section 508, ADA, and principles of Universal Design for Learning, copyright and other laws.
* Skill in providing lead work for other sufficient to plan, coordinate, and direct alternative media requests.
* Ability to operate and assist students with educational software or assistive technology that provides an accommodation to their learning.
* Ability to effectively communicate with all people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
* Be proficient in the signlanguage systems and demonstrate a mastery of specialized and technical signs appropriate to interpreting in a university setting.
Physical Requirements of the Job: Light: Requires occasionally transporting such articles as file boxes and heavy hand tools or heavier materials with help from others and/or transporting light objects frequently. The position may require movement throughout building(s) to a significant degree.

Monday - Friday, 1 pm-9:30 pm, with some morning and weekend hours required based upon need.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Education Interpreter provides interpreting and transliterating services for students/staff/parents who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing in various environments. The primary function is to act as a facilitator of communication between the Deaf/Hard of Hearing student and his/her educational community, so that the student may actively participate in the educational program. The Educational Interpreter serves as a related service provider on a student's educational team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
To provide meaningful classroom communication for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing student in an integrated setting and/or any other setting as deemed necessary
Change simultaneously the spoken language into finger spelling and signlanguage and conversely the signlanguage into the spoken language
Use ASL and/or Signed English based on the student's mode of communication
Prepare for the interpreting assignment by reading and researching materials pertaining to the particular class
Be prepared to interpret for other classes (day and evening) and various other interpreting situations in which the student needs interpreting assistance (i.e., extracurricular)
Prepare vocabulary booklets by transferring written language into signs (i.e., reading, science, health, etc.) to reinforce signing skills of the teachers, parents and the students
To develop a rapport with the classroom teacher
Work to establish and maintain open communication with the mainstream and Deaf/Hard of Hearing staff
Provide information to the classroom teacher as to the role of the interpreter in the classroom
To assist in meeting the student's educational needs
Evaluate the physical setting in the classroom so as to position yourself in the appropriate place to ensure maximum communication for the student
Use the student's preferred mode of communication (i.e., ASL/Signed English/Pidgen English/Combination)
Become aware of the student's language and skill level to assure appropriate communication techniques
Check for the understanding of the signs, new vocabulary and concepts
If a note taker is not available, help to secure a note taker in class
Encourage the student to participate in the class
Develop a good rapport with the student without infringing on the student's rights
Understand and assist in the implementation and follow through of the student's educational plan developed through the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process, including providing academic support, behavior management, activities of daily living, and/or transition support as directed
To work in partnership with the Deaf/Hard of Hearing staff
Serve as a collaborative member of the student's educational team including providing information to the team that will help evaluate and plan the student's educational program
Make appropriate personnel aware of needs that occur in the classroom that may affect the student's ability to succeed
Provide teachers with information from the mainstream class related to class discussions, assignments, behavior of the student and tests
Assist in developing new signs in the technical and academic areas to help the student learn new concepts
Assist in tutoring in a particular subject when needed
Provide materials/handouts to the teacher that has been distributed in the mainstream class
To teach sign classes
Teach sign classes to hearing students, parents and staff as appropriate
Participate as a team member in the elective sign classes offered at the secondary level as needed
Perform any other duties as assigned by the Special Education Supervisor, Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, and/or Principal, including:
Attend workshops and in-service training sessions to enhance knowledge and skills as an interpreter
Promote Deaf/Hard of Hearing awareness in the classroom and throughout the school
Accompany the Deaf/Hard of Hearing student for staffings, conferences and field trips as assigned

Facilitates complex communication between staff and clients or patients, which includes parents or guardians. Communication may take place in a medical or community setting; providing interpretation, sight translation, and/or translation of documents on an AVS (After Visiti Summary). Communication would be in languages other than Spanish.
Minimum of two years interpreter experience required, preferably in a medical setting. In-house contractors may qualify after full rotation has been completed, generally around 12 months.
Bilingual who speaks, reads and writes proficiently in both native and target languages (Rohingya) with ability to break linguistic and cultural barriers between patients and medical staff. Ability to shift from one language to another in simultaneous and consecutive mode of interpreting.
