Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Services Coordinator, Sign-LanguageInterpreters provide communication access sign-languageinterpreting (SLI) to Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing individuals, including students, faculty, staff, and university guests. Incumbents facilitate communication by using American SignLanguage (ASL) to provide sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign transliteration and interpretation services in a wide array of academic settings and public events.
Position Information
Communication Access
Provide immediate sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign transliteration and interpretation services to Deaf and hard of hearing students, faculty, staff, and guests in settings as assigned. Settings include, but are not limited to the classroom, student-teacher meetings, and/or other academic, instructional, administrative meetings, or public campus events; and
Under general supervision of the Lead Interpreter, apply Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct as appropriate.
Preparatory & Post-Assignment Tasks
Research technical terminology related to assignment to develop vocabulary in appropriate settings;
Consult with student, instructor, and/or interpreting team, as necessary; and
Work with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Services Coordinator to resolve any issues around access to materials for interpreters and/or the consumer.
Other Duties as Assigned At All Times
Demonstrate behaviors that are in line with the User Friendly Principles (P530C) and Principles of Conduct for a Multi-Cultural University (P30D);
Demonstrate safe work practices for oneself, others and the office environment.
Minimum Qualifications
Assignments vary in type and extent of knowledge and abilities in terms of subject matter and vocabulary required, but common requirements include the following knowledge, abilities, and background:
Knowledge and Abilities: Working knowledge of the process on interpretation; ASL and/or English sign system as required by the student(s) or the assignment; the methods and techniques used in communicating with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing consumers; the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) code of professional conduct; the vocabulary used in the courses to which the Interpreter is assigned; and a demonstrated knowledge of Deaf Culture. Ability to hear spoken English and use ASL, Signed English, and/or another manual sign system to effectively generate language; interpret and transliterate between the ASL and sign systems and spoken English at a speed required by the assignment, which may involve a variety of settings such as a classroom, conference, and/or one-on-one meeting; and work with students from diverse backgrounds. Education and Experience: Any combination of formal training and relevant documented interpreting experience that demonstrates assurance of the skills appropriate for the level of the assignment(s) is required. Typically, sufficient interpreting training or experience requires graduation from an interpreter training program and/or relevant documented interpreting experience. In addition, a wide acquaintance with academic higher education through attendance at a postsecondary educational institution may be essential to fully comprehend and accurately interpret the concepts, language, and vocabulary used in the assigned instructional, academic, and/or administrative situations.
Preferred Qualifications
High School diploma (or equivalent);
Bachelor's Degree from a post-secondary institution;
Certificate of completion from an accredited Interpreter Preparation Program or equivalent;
Thorough knowledge of Deaf culture;
Previous interpreting experience in a post-secondary setting;
Knowledge and experience with manual and oral interpreting/transliteration techniques in higher education;
Ability to work as a contributing member of an interpreting/transliterating team in higher education settings;
Ability to assess and meet communication preferences of consumer;
Knowledge of, adherence to, and current membership in the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct;
Commitment to the Associate Continuing Education Tracking (ACET) program of RID;
Working knowledge of the range of disability types encountered in higher education settings;
At least 2 years of previous interpreting/transliterating experience in a post-secondary setting;
RID Certification: NIC: Certified, Advanced or Master; CI, CT, CSC, IC/TC and/or NAD Certification, Levels 3, 4 or 5;
Preference given to an interpreter who has proven experience and excels in upper-division and graduate-level courses;

REQUIRED LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
There is no license/certification required. However, preference will be given to the candidate holding one of the following: RID Certification: NIC: Certified, Advanced or Master; CI, CT, CSC, IC/TC and/or NAD Certification, Levels 3, 4 or 5.
Environmental/Physical/Special
Occasional off campus work may be required.
Assigned hours may include some evenings and/or weekends.

We began in Watsonville 1978 as a storefront "free clinic," and with the ever growing need for health services, in 1992 we became a federally qualified community health center (FQHC). Today we are a primary health care network with 11 clinic sites, over 400 employees and continue to provide high quality services to patients of all ages.
We are seeking an individual that will provide Mixteco-English-Spanish interpretation, as well as coordinate and standardize processes to improve and enhance the quality of interpretation (and translation) services for patients who have limited English proficiency (LEP). The Language Access Coordinator/Mixteco Interpreter must possess a commitment to provide exceptional customer service, patient privacy and safety, cultural humility, and a desire to be part of a team. This position is housed under the Patient Services department, supervised by the Director of Patient Services.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Provide Mixteco-English-Spanish interpretation for all services and locations of Salud.
* Coordinate and standardize process of connecting limited English proficiency (LEP) patients with appropriate language support services - in-person interpretation, tele-interpretation, and other relevant modalities of interpretation.
* Demonstrate cultural proficiency with the values and behavior that enables the person or institution to engage effectively with people and groups who are different from them.
* Build and maintain interpreting schedules. Arrange for in-advance and on-demand interpretation requests.
* Organize and maintain Salud's language access resources and workflows. Act as main point of contact for language support services at Salud.
* Provide trainings and education to staff as needed.
* Act as liaison between language support vendors and Salud. Coordinate contract logistics and payment with external interpretation and translation vendors.
* Track and monitor LEP patient experience by means of surveys, data reporting, observation, and other relevant means. Implement improvements based on findings.
* Participate in local trainings and collaborative meetings that collectively work to improve access to community services for LEP community members.
* Lead the implementation and adoption of technological solutions for interpretation and translation services for Salud patients.
* Collect staff feedback and explore opportunities for improved language support workflows and resources; implement improvements based on findings.
* Route patient needs and requests as appropriate.
* Consistently adhere to and/or exceed SPLG's communication guidelines and expectations with internal and external customers including co-workers, patients, and external partners.
* Collaborate with Salud's Community Health Services and Communications departments to support effective patient communication.
* Communicate effectively by using welcoming words, proper tone of voice, appropriate body language, eye contact and smiling in all interactions. Listen skillfully and display a willingness and ability to acknowledge patient and co-workers' needs, expectations and values through the use of reflective listening and empathy conveyance. Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
* Trilingual- Mixteco, English, Spanish.
* High School diploma or GED (AA preferred).
* Experience working as a professional interpreter (preferred).
* Experience working in a healthcare setting (preferred).
* Proficient in Microsoft Office, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook.
* Experience with communication technologies such as telephonic or video remote interpreting
* Demonstrated ability to consistently adhere to Salud's communication guidelines and expectations with internal and external customers including co-workers, patients and external partners including the use of C.A.R.E.
* Valid CA Driver's License and current vehicle insurance; must be able to travel between sites.

This position is required to provide service over virtual systems as well as provide face-to-face service at various types of medical facilities, e.g. physician offices, hospital outpatient facilities, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, etc.
This position is an important communication link between a doctors and patients.
