Job Summary The Limited Term Sign Language Interpreter provides sign language interpreting for students who are deaf, primarily for in-person and online classes, meetings, and in other college-wide activities. Additionally, the this position recruits, screens, and mentors contracted self-employed interpreters to provide services to GGC students. The Sign Language Interpreter dispenses training and resource information to faculty and students when appropriate and upon request. This position is designated as Campus Security Authority (CSA) and is responsible for reporting crimes and other incidents to the Clery Act Compliance Officer for inclusion in the Annual Campus Security Report in accordance with the Federal Clery Act and GGC policy. The continuation of this position is contingent on available funding. Responsibilities * Provides 20+ hours of sign language interpreting per week appropriate to students' mode of communication * Assesses students communication mode and provides sign language appropriate for each student for best access * Provides interpreting to current and potential students as needed for access outside of class; interprets with assigned team member as appropriate; provides interpreting services for college faculty and staff as needed and available once students have been assisted * Assists the Director of Disability Services with selecting, evaluating and mentoring independent contracted interpreters for skill and other essential factors, including professionalism and ethical practices; maintains awareness of area contract interpreters and their availability for work * Maintains working knowledge of national credential assessments, skill levels and certifications * Schedules interpreters for semester assignments, special events and as substitutes * Provides technical assistance for access needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing; informs the Coordinator of any access issues related to students who are deaf or hard of hearing; assists with coordination of accessible media for college-wide use and for specific instructional purposes * Collaborates with the Director of Disability Services in preparing and presenting programs for current and prospective students, family members, the community, high school staff, GGC faculty/staff about postsecondary services to students who are deaf and hard of hearing * May be required to cross-train for another position and/or responsibility within the college in order to provide both back-up for a department as well as to supplement resources needed during certain times of the year. Bachelor's Degree preferred. 2. Completion of an interpreter preparation program or equivalent experience required. 3. Render the message faithfully, always conveying the content and spirit of the speaker, using the language most readily understood by the person(s) being served. 15. Never counsel, advise, or interject personal opinions into interpreted situations. 16. Accept assignments using discretion with regard to skill, setting, and the consumers involved. 17. Function in a manner appropriate to each interpreted situation, demonstrating professional appearance, conduct, and promptness. 18. Strive to further knowledge and skills through participation in workshops, professional meetings, interaction with professional colleagues, and reading of current literature in the field. 19. Strive to maintain high professional standards through professional membership, certification, and ethical practices. 20. Prepare for demanding course material as necessary for successful interpreting/transliterating. 21. Educate consumers about using interpreting services and providing visual access to deaf and hard of hearing students. 22. Assist in education about note-takers and captioned materials. 23. Other responsibilities such as tutoring, supervising, disciplining, and evaluating students are also inappropriate and manifest confusion about the interpreter's role. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Special education interpreter most often works in communicating concepts and information accurately in the school, community and home. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Interpreting assignments may vary in length, depending upon the school schedule.
