EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION:
A minimum of 1 year experience in providing medical interpreting to Deaf and hard of hearing patients in a professional setting is required.
A minimum of 3 years of directly related experience is preferred. Experience at a Level I Trauma Center is preferred.
EDUCATION DESCRIPTION:
Certification recognized by RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) is required.
RID requires a Bachelor Degree or equivalent experience for certification as an interpreter of American Sign Language (ASL).
SPECIAL SKILLS DESCRIPTION:
Must be bilingual in English and language to be interpreted, solid knowledge of medical terminology and competence in communicating the meaning of terms.
Strong ability to interpret diagnostic processes, treatments, procedures, preventive care, and be culturally competent.
Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients, their families and health care providers.
Ability to perform under stressful situations and medical emergencies.
Travel between locations during shift is required.
Formal interpreter training is preferred.
Proven linguistic abilities in medical interpreting experience is preferred.
LICENSURE DESCRIPTION:
State of Wisconsin, Department of Safety and Professional Services license is required.

Schedule Details: Availability to cover Tuesdays, Thursdays and every other Friday from 3PM-7PM. It also requires shift rotation to accommodate interpreting needs on various shifts: Monday through Friday, 19:00-00:00+, weekends 06:00-15:00, and 15:00-00:00+. Other shifts as needed. The expectation is to work 14 hours per 2-week schedule. This is a on call/ pool position, candidate would need to report to WMH, MUK, and OMH ED/Inpatient areas within 30 minutes of the request.
CCHI/IMIA certifications are a plus but not required. We will support getting certification and some CEUs to maintain certification. Must have completed a medical interpreter program.
What You Will Do:
Conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. May be required to translate written documents. Perform a variety of interpretation and coordination services to assist non-English speaking patients, the deaf and hearing-impaired patients receiving care within the ProHealth Care system
Requirements:
Ability to write and speak well English and Spanish. Able to function independently.
Technical Diploma for Medical Interpreter, from an accredited institution preferred
