By 1805, John Siler was living on a plantation farm of 615 acres in a house on the lot where the United States Post Office (116 East Raleigh Street) is now located.
On December 15, 1842, William W. (Captain Billy) Matthews bought John Siler’s house and 140 acres.
In 1868, due to reconstruction and the new State Constitution, a five-member board of county commissioners was established.
Moncure was established in 1871 when the Raleigh and Augusta Air-Line Railroad obtained land there.
The post office established in Samuel Siler's store on July 13, 1880 was named Energy.
In 1882, Samuel Siler’s storehouse was sold at auction.
On July 3, 1884, the post office was named Siler Station.
In 1884 the opening of the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad through western Chatham stimulated the development of the towns of Goldston, Bear Creek, Bonlee, and Siler City along its right of way.
Early in 1885, the post office was moved to the store of E.R. McLean and Co. on North Birch Avenue.
Bear Creek was originally named Richmond after Richard Jones who opened a business in Bear Creek in 1885.
On July 28, 1886, the post office was named Siler City.
On January 12, 1887, the Thompson School opened and was located on the site of where City Hall is located today.
The town was incorporated March 7, 1887.
