Silverton High School company history timeline

1862

The first Silverton public school was a 2-room, 2-story building started in 1862.

1890

In 1890 a six room school building was completed for fall term.

1907

In 1907, a six-room high school, later named Washington Irving, was erected.

1915

In 1915 the new high school was erected on First Street between Park and A Streets, next to the Washington Irving Building.

1921

In August of 1921, Emerson School was moved to the corner of First and A Street to make room for the construction of Eugene Field School.

1922

In 1922 it was named Washington Irving.

1924

Emerson School burned to the ground during Christmas vacation in 1924.

1929

The present high school building was built in 1929 after the old building burned.

1939

In 1939, the school was traded to the City of Silverton for the athletic field for the new high school at the end of Brown Street. (Photo credit to Raggie Clites.)

1970

The high school was extensively remodeled in 1970, and a new junior high wing was added to the south side of it.

1977

Partitions from the old junior high building were removed to create a football field house and weight room in 1977.

1996

The aging field house was razed in 1996, and a new P.E. gym and athletic field house was built.

2006

For the school year of 2006-07, Eugene Field held grades Kindergarten through third grades, Robert Frost fourth through sixth grades, Mark Twain seventh through eighth grades. the Pine Street Campus for 9th grade freshmen. and Silverton High School grades 10 through 12.

2016

Steel beams support the old brick building; they were installed during the $2.6 million renovation that created the middle school campus in 2016.
