Simplicity Pattern company was established in 1927 by Joseph Shapiro.
In 1932 they started printing full colour illustrations on all pattern envelopes.
Couturier patterns appeared as early as 1932, but at first they were not exact reproductions of the fashions shown on Paris runways.
In the early 1940’s, Simplicity embarked on a major sewing education program, by which travelling representatives, fashion shows, educational books and literature were presented and disseminated across the country.
Simplicity aimed to create and reproduce patterns that were easy to use and affordable to the average household, being sold for about 15 cents (US). Their unprinted patterns ended in 1946 and were all printed thereafter.
In 1948, they purchased two new presses specially designed to print markings directly onto the pattern tissue.
Beginning in 1949, Vogue Patterns began the “Paris Originals” featuring designs from the houses of Balmain, Schiaparelli, Lanvin, and Jacques Fath.
Hubert Burda Media (founded by Hubert Burda’s grandfather, Franz Burda I) is a German magazine publishing company that started back in 1898. Thus began BurdaStyle magazine (initially called Burda Moden) in 1950.
In 1961 Condé Nast entered in a licensing agreement with the Butterick Company.
Kwik Sew has been creating home-sewing patterns since 1967.
Founded in 1967 by Kerstin Martensson, who also produced many of the early designs and patterns, this company was an early leader in patterns perfected for use with knits.
In 1967, Vogue launched the Americana series, featuring original fashions styled by American designers.
In 1984, in response to the explosion of avant-garde designers around the world Vogue Patterns launched the “Individualist” line of designer patterns.
In 1989 Boye Needle was merged into Wrights.
