The New Tooling Operations Manager provides leadership and direction for both the Tool & Die Design Supervisor and the Tool & Die Shop Supervisor, overseeing the end-to-end process of new tooling-from concept and design through build, tryout, release, and ongoing improvement. This role manages workflow, production scheduling, material procurement, capacity planning, and outsourcing decisions to ensure that tooling supports production needs and meets all new product launch timelines. The New Tooling Operations Manager collaborates closely with Engineering, Product Management, and Operations to ensure tooling is safe, cost-effective, and aligned with business and customer expectations.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING (% of Time)
Lead and Develop High-Performing Teams (30%)
* Directly manage the Tool & Die Design Supervisor and Tool & Die Shop Supervisor.
* Develop, coach, and evaluate team members while fostering collaboration between design and the tool room.
* Promote a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Capacity & Resource Planning and Cross-Functional Collaboration (25%)
* Partner with Engineering, Product Management and Production teams to align tooling schedules with NPD phases, prototypes, and pilot builds.
* Manage labor allocation, machine capacity, and tool room utilization for all new tooling work.
* Forecast tooling workloads and prepare resource plans to support growth, seasonal demand, and major product launches.
* Implement process improvements to increase throughput and eliminate bottlenecks.
* Collaborate with Operations and Supply Chain on sourcing, scheduling, and material strategies.
* Support troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for tooling issues affecting try outs, pilot runs, or production.
New Tooling Design & Engineering (20%)
* Oversee die design, modeling, and detailing using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or equivalent platforms.
* Review and approve new tooling designs to ensure functionality, manufacturability, and long-term durability.
* Partner with Engineering and Product Management to provide tooling input during concept and feasibility reviews for new products as well as ensuring design aligns with manufacturing capabilities and best practices
Tool Room & Tooling Build Operations (15%)
* Manage the daily workflow for new tooling builds, modifications, and tryouts.
* Oversee production scheduling for both design and shop resources to meet project deadlines.
* Ensure timely and accurate purchase of materials, components, and supplies needed for tool builds.
* Determine when to outsource tooling work based on cost, lead time, capacity, and capability.
Continuous Improvement (10%)
* Establish and improve tooling design standards, documentation practices, and build processes.
* Identify opportunities for technology upgrades, process automation, and improved efficiency.
* Lead efforts to improve tool room organization, 5S practices, safety, and preventive maintenance.
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, marks parts and performs pre-packing functions on castings to assure conformance of casting to customer requirements following established safety and operating procedures in accordance with quality standards. Ensures that documentation, tooling and parts are correctly matched to paperwork.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Inspector Visual (FID)
Objective: To set up and perform marking, pre-packing, and packing functions on castings conforming to visual and dimensional specifications on technique cards.
Essential Job Functions:
* Follow established housekeeping and safety practices to maintain the quality of the work.
* Demonstrate ability to log on main computer system, extract information, log time, enter inventory amount and forward to next operation.
* Programs, designs tooling, and performs set-ups of pin marking equipment, and offers instruction to lesser skilled people.
* Transports castings into and out of FID, responsibility for verification of proper paper work for the area.
* Understands the Divisional Quality Policy, identify the location of the QCP'S, Quality System Manual, and OPC's and display a willingness and interest to learn through on the job training.
* Identifies, marks castings, and inventories area stamps as required by specification, instructions, and/or tech cards.
* Counts parts to ensure proper number of castings are sent to customer.
* Completes all necessary paperwork and records as required and verifies correct procedures of those lesser skilled.
* Offers procedural improvements to Supervisor and assists other personnel as may be required.
* Responsible for calibration of all equipment in area (maintains appropriate records), and any discrepancies in counts or improper stamps, following QCPs and OPCs, or out of date marking conditions.
* Identifies and marks castings as required by specification, instructions, and/or tech cards.
* Reports any discrepancies, or out of date marking condition to supervisor.
* Requires ability to operate pin marking equipment, vibro-etcher, and electro etcher.
* Has the ability to do most of all marking jobs without instructions from the area lead.
* Able to maintain an excellent part marking proficiency with zero tolerance for error.
* Successfully comply with Customer Acceptance Criteria on a consistent basis.
* Demonstrate the ability to research pertinent data to support the generation of accurate tech cards for the department.
* Demonstrate an understanding of all paperwork associat ed with the job and be able to explain why this paperwork is necessary and demonstrate a high rate of accuracy in completing all required documents, including scrap/rework tickets, PCAR's, DCAR's, travelers, and daily "WIP" reports.
* Has ability to pack castings according to customer requirements, without direct supervision, in a manner that will preclude castings from being damaged in shipment.

Under close supervision, perform a wide range of machining operations using lathes, drills, saws, and grinders to complete casting parts following standards methods and procedures.

* Demonstrate proper procedures for signing off work orders and preventative maintenance sheets.
* Uses all standard tools such as benders, wire pullers, knockout cutters, hole saws, power saws, drill motors, etc.
* Understands operation and theory of ARC and MIG; ability to join parts adequately, but not necessarily structural or X-Ray quality.
* Understands operation and theory of Gas Welding and Cutting; ability to set-up equipment and be able to perform cuts and welds.

* Proficient in using the on-line computer system as required in their job and identified in their procedures to perform their assigned tasks.

* Repairs facilities problems such as plumbing, welding, carpentry.
* Makes operational tests using such instruments as voltmeters, ammeters, wattmeter's, ohmmeters, etc.
* Removes and installs motors following basic drawings, layouts, instructions, and simple schematics.
* Updates all electrical drawings.
* Know approximate costs of molds, tools, equipment and supplies used in each department, and demonstrate care of company equipment.
* Can determine proper wire, fuse, motor starter and breaker sizes with a minimum amount of supervision.
* Is able to trouble shoot problems with motors and standard electrical equipment.
* Understands operation of pneumatic and hydraulic power units and controls. Trouble shoots and repair pneumatic and hydraulic systems, rebuild cylinders and valves.
* Ability to read and understand blueprints and sketches make accurate adjustment to equipment. Knows when to request necessary repair parts from blueprints, manuals, or from parts removed from machines.
* Be able to hook up 440, 230, and 110-volt equipment properly.
* Able to install conduit, wire, panels, switches, control fixture and electrical equipment. Installs and maintains conventional industrial equipment such as transformers, motors, motor controls, relays, etc.
* Troubleshoots, locates and diagnoses deficiencies in electrical equipment, transformers, fixtures, control panels, etc. Determines need for repair or replacement, best and safest method of restoring interrupted service.
* Modifies and maintains electrical connections between outlets, pull boxes, breaker panels, etc., and tests the circuit for continuity and proper connection.
* Updates electrical drawings for facilities as required.
* Has thorough knowledge of the National Electric Code.
* Possess the ability to make cost analysis for decision making, and exercise good judgment.
* Understands different types of atmospheric and pressure burner systems, gas safety devices, and electrical heating systems, different types of insulation and refractory materials and construction methods.
Essential Equipment, Vehicles, Tools and/or Machinery used:
* A wide variety of meters, scopes, leak detectors, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
* All manner of power hand tools.
* Familiar with computer assisted drawing programs.
* Welder, Cutting Torch, Plasma Torch, pipe bender, Pipe Cutter/Threader, Hand Grinders and various other necessary equipment to complete assigned tasks.
* Ability to operate rented equipment not normally in plant.
